We felt that the island was very pretty but that the attitude of the business people was not at all welcoming 'Fleece the tourist' seems to be the general view.

There is something very special about Cape Clear. There has to be - it stands alone as the last outpost of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean. It is unique. North Harbour provides a unique welcome - there is always a bustle with ferries coming and going and there is a great welcome for visiting boats. Walking on the hills provide amazing views and South Harbour is a lovely place - the Lake, the Lighthouse, the Church.............. all very special

Liked the house we rented from Marianne-she was very helful. Shop was fine and the pub did open even though they said it wouldent. Landscape and walks were great. Unfortunately Heritage centre was closed in september. There were quite a few people around and some commented on this.

We stayed the last week of August 2012 and had pretty nice weather on this quiet (until the day we were leaving when the International Storytelling Festival began) Island.
A great time from start to finish. The Captain and crew of the ferry were friendly and informative and glad to welcome new visitors.

I stayed in a Tipi for 2 nights at the end of August, our group was my husband & I, our three kids (aged 5, 3 & 10months), a 20 year old friend from NZ, and another couple with their 5 yr old & 2 yr old. We v.nearly had to cancel at the last minute as the rain was bucketing down but we had the car loaded, the ferry tickets purchased and the deposit paid so we set off saying if it was still lashing rain by the time we reached Baltimore we would turn back (to Cork city).
I am SO PLEASED we didn't!! We were able to unload all our equipment on the peer right were the ferry picks up its passengers - the ferry staff & other passengers helped us get loaded. The trip across takes about 45mins, there is no commentry on this one (apparently there is on the one from Schull FYI). Sally met us on the other site, and we and the 3/4 other familes headed for Chleire Haven were able to load our stuff into her van for transport to the campsite. The other familes had decided to head for pizzas, etc, in the little restaurant at the pier, but we had BBQ etc with us.
Its about a 10min walk up to the campsite - at this stage the evening had cleared to a pretty sunny evening... the tipis were clean and kitted out with a bean bag in each and a few extra cushions & blankets, brush & pan and for me the pre-requested travel cot and bedding for my small man - perfect & for no extra charge. Sally ran through the facilities, etc, all perfect. Toilets and showers v.clean. Campers kitchen with the basics of what you would need. A few extra frying pans and pots etc ....She also instructed us of a few things to do, such as go and feed the pigs nearby with our food left overs - big hit with the kids, less of a hit with their smell sensitive mothers :-)
It is hard to describe how beautiful this place is - we absolutely LOVED it. The view from the campsite of the south harbour - I could have sat and looked at it all day. The kids had an absolute ball, we all slept very well....the first night it rained alot during the night, the second night it was dry. The Saturday we were there started off wet, but we put on waterproofs and went for a walk anyway. By 12 noon it had cleared and we all ended up in shorts and teeshirts.

We went for lunch in the restauant down by the pier, really good fresh crab and homemade cakes, etc. Kids loved playing on the small little stretch of sand there.

We were surprised by the no of under 5s there (possibly due to a groupon deal a few months back?) - we had 5 under 5s but there were at least 3 other families with under 5s there. It was very quiet at night and in the early morning....

Seriously relaxing. If you like camping, you'll love this place.
Will defo be back!
