BirdWatch Ireland run a series of courses from the Bird Observatory on Cape Clear island, Co. Cork, and I highly recommend the "Beginning Birdwatching" course. I travelled by car from Dublin to Baltimore, where I got the ferry. The journey was easy, but you do need to check the ferry times in advance.

Accomodation: I stayed in the Bird Observatory which is a lovely, clean hostel, with toilet and shower facilities and a communal kitchen, situated in the idyllic harbour. The couple who run the hostel were very friendly and easy to talk to.

Course: I only had a basic/general knowldege of birds and I have now learnt skills for watching and identifying birds. I was able to borrow binoculars from the Observatory. We were given helpful tips on the use of binoculars and advise of what to do when purchasing a pair. The number of participants is limited which makes it easier to interact with the course leader.

Positives: we saw and heard about 30 different bird species each day! The weather was georgous so we were able to put up the nets and some birds were examined in the hand and ringed (by the course leader who had a liscece to do it). Other wildlife that we saw included: dolphins, a seal, a rabbit, a lizzard, Green hairstreak butterfly and an elephant hawk moth.

Negatives: I brought my wet gear but I forgot to bring suncream and got very sunburnt - you need to be prepared for all weather conditions!

If you are lucky enough to be visiting Baltimore Cork you really must pop over on the ferry to see the lovely Island of Cape Clear.
We were in Baltimore the last weekend in June for the annual O'Driscoll clan gathering. Our hosts, the people of Baltimore, arranged a trip to the Island as it is the heart of the O'Driscoll territory.
We travelled over on the ferry with the rest of the clan and were welcomed by our guide for the day, Jeff, after a hearty meal in the O'Driscoll pub we headed off on a ramble around the Island.
We ambled (hiked really) over hills through heather, gorse and wild flowers, Jeff even pointed out Fools Gold in the veins of the cliffs, fascinating.
The highlight of the ramble (hike) was a visit to the Cape clear museum the Director Dr Eamon Lankford took us around the museum. We learnt about the history of the Island and the O'Driscolls.
Cape Clear has two harbours, a lake, pubs, craft shop, Museum and above all breathtaking scenery.
It hosts a Story Telling Festival, Summer Language and Writing schools, Regattas. Its a tiny paradise, but be sure to pack some stout shoes or boots to get the best out of your ramble!!!

There is only one location in all of Eire to see the real Ireland and it is Cape Clear. I may be biased in this regard in that my Mom was born on the island over 100 year ago. Stand on the hill by the light house on a windy night and simply listen to mother nature and view the Cape and the mainland in the distance. I did and I swear I could hear the voices of my ancestors of long ago!! The Sweeneys were a proud clan of islanders and simple called Cape their home.

This trip was enjoyable and exciting from the minute we stepped onto the ferry at Schull. On the way over the skipper kept us entertained with tales, tall and short, about the history and geography of everything we could see around us. On the way back it was more of the same, including three or four songs while he played his squeezebox and steered the boat. Definitely the best ferry trip ever.
The Skippers tales led us to expect certain things when we got to the island but I won't go into too much detail as I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. Suffice it to say that he set up the visit beautifully. I can report that the pubs were delightful and the walks over the island were easy and enjoyable. We spent an hour or so at the lake, soaking our feet and allowing the inhabitants (of the lake that is) to nibble at leisure - this will mean something to you when you visit. The views from the island were stunning. One day is simply not enough. We will definitely return next year for a longer stay.
