“Stayed here twice”
Reviewed May 15, 2014 via mobile

It is a very friendly, comfortable, hospitable place. It is located at a narrow quiet street just parallel to the main street of the town. It is a good starting point close to the walking Beara peninsula trails. The rooms are simple and nice. The breakfast is excellent. The host is hospitable and friendly and his dog is playful. We stayed here twice and came back with pleasure.

Island View House will be our first choice if we return to Castletownbere. Denis Hanafin provides a great service here, whether for a holiday or an overnight business trip like ours. There are 11 rooms in this modern single-storied house overlooking the town, the harbour and Bere Island. There is ample free parking onsite, or it can be reached on foot from the bus terminal by climbing the steps beside the parish church, then turn left for about 250 m along the "Back Road".

There is a lovely sitting room with a great view, free Wi-fi, a wood-burning stove that was on all night, a hospitality tray with kettle which is available day and night. There is a piano and a large TV, a table and chairs if you wanted to play a game of cards, or just lounge in the arm chairs.

Our bedroom was big enough and the beds very comfortable. There was no kettle or hairdryer in the bedroom, but the wardrobe had two towelling bathrobes. Our en-suite was fine, except the floor covering was due to be replaced. Other than that, everything was spotlessly clean.

The diningroom was tastefully laid out. Denis asked us to order breakfast the night before, and when the hot meal came it was more than we could eat! Freshly toasted white bread and Denis's own home-made brown bread straight from the oven. As well as the hot meal, there is a side-board laden with cornflakes, muesli, yoghurts, a bowl of tinned pineapple, a range of fresh fruits and cheese, as well as freshly made coffee and tea.

We enjoyed looking at the family photos of Denis' grown-up children, and asking him about them. Denis a fisherman for 25 years, has made a great job of developing this attractive B&B, keeping up the tradition set by his lovely wife whom he lost to cancer more than a decade ago.

As other reviewers noted, his three-year old labrador, Bruno, gave us a warm welcome too. But if you are not a dog lover, you won't even see or hear him!

Room Tip: As a B&B there no fitness centre or swimming pool!

Nice big breakfast in the morning to get you off on your way. The rooms were comfortable and the hosts were friendly. Bruno, the resident friendly lab will greet you like a long lost friend. Castletownbere is a quaint village with some great pubs and restaurants and Island View House is within walking distance to all of them.

We stayed with Denis for 2 nights and we were very pleased with the rooms, bed, showers and food. You will get great service and the best view of Castletownbere harbor and the bay area. Bruno, the mascot, will greet you when you get out of the car, and he is a sweet natured dog. You are directly above the downtown square, so you can walk to town if you can handle the hills. Have lunch or tea/scones at Copper Kettle with Darin and Maria and be sure to drop into MacCarthy's Bar and have a pint with Adrienne! It's a great little town with lovely people you will want to talk with.

I stayed at Island View a total of 3 nights while walking the Beara Way (booked through Hillwalk Ireland). Denis is a wonderful host and chef - his delicious breakfasts kept me going on the long walks each day. The b&b is also aptly named, with stunning views of Bere Island! I definitely recommend staying here, you'll be greeted with warm hospitality, comfortable & clean rooms, and tasty food!

When we went up the little alley road, we both thought -- oh oh - this may not be good until we came to the front entrance of this B&B/guest house! Brian had us park around the back and take our luggage in the long way rather than deal with the front steps. We had the Dingle Suite and it is worth every penny we paid for it even though my husband who has artificial hips and knees could not get into the bath tub to shower.
The lounge is big and well stocked for guest. The breakfast area has a number of tables and the food is well stocked. Brian has fresh fish that he will cook up for you and it is Delightful, Delicious & lots of it! My hubby loved the pancakes.
We loved the dog who is fun to play with in the yard and is the official greeter when you come and go.
The view from the Dingle suite is of the harbor and you can watch the boats come and go as well as the clouds. It is a most roomy place and we had good Wi-Fi reception here.
Brian recommended Murphy's to eat and that was a spot on decision.
You can not go wrong here as it is a great jumping off spot for all of Beara.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the Dingle suite - you can not go wrong!

We arrived in Castletownbere on a very quiet Sunday afternoon. We later found out that most of the people in town were watching a rugby match, including Denis, Island View's friendly host. We felt bad for interrupting him, but he showed us to our room and took our breakfast orders for the next morning.

The center of town is literally down a few flights of stairs from Island View. It was very convenient to the restaurants and MacCarthys Bar. We spent the day driving around the Beara Peninsula and returned to our quiet room to sleep. The surrounding areas are very beautiful and definitely worth the visit.

We would recommend Island View for its central location and kind hosts. Bruno, Denis's son's dog, was very amusing and also worth mentioning.
