Owner description: Bantry House and Garden is a stately home in southwest Ireland situated right on Bantry Bay with panoramic views of the bay and the caha mountains. The estate is owned by Egerton and Brigitte Shelswell-White and is managed by their daughter Sophie and her partner Josh. It has been in the family since the 1700s. The house contains original furniture and objects d'art. The garden is laid out over 7 terraces with a fountain, large wisteria circle and 100 steps leading up to the woodland. The house, garden and tearoom is open to the public daily from easter to october. The estate hosts weddings, music festivals and fairs. We have a separate review page for our B&B accommodation.

This is a lovely Irish country house. The rooms are full of history and priceless antiques. This is a good place to visit for anybody who loves antiques, art and gardens. In the entrance there are visitors guides in several languages. One of the rooms was set up for a wedding and I think that setting and surroundings look wonderful for a small wedding.

The gardens are extensive and well maintained. We climbed the stairs in the garden and were rewarded by a beautiful view of the house, gardens and Bantry Bay.

There is also a tea room and we had sandwiches and coffee there. The food was good and very fresh.

We visited on a cold and rainy day and were welcomed by a roaring fire in the entry way fireplace. It was a good way to start our visit. The tour is self-guided with printed material in English and several other languages available. We enjoyed our visit to the house but canceled our visit to the gardens and grounds because of the weather. We are glad we drove down from Kenmare for the visit, but I doubt we would go back. The next day we visited Muckross House and Gardens and enjoyed the visit there more.

Bantry House is my favourite place to visit in South West Ireland: the situation, the history, the welcome. If possible, read up the family's history on the Bantry House website before you go so you know who the portaits are. Look out for the guy playing the trombone as a youngster. He can tell you so much!

We toured all of Ireland over a period of several weeks this last summer. I DID NOT want to go to Ireland, my wife did. I must confess I am stupid as it is a marvelous country. One of the most splendid times in my life was spent at Bantry House. The house, the accommodations, the food (breakfasts), the owners and the ambience of the place is purely magical to say the least. The setting is utterly extraordinary. I liken Banty House & Gardens to the Cullinan diamond in the Imperial State Crown; a priceless gem surrounded by beauty and grace.
Thank you Shelswell-Whites for allowing me a few days in arcadia.
