“valentia Island Heritage Centre”

A very informative museum. The entrance price reflects the vast amount of refurbishment and preservation which is carried out annually with no financial aid from any sources. The Centre goes to extreme lengths to keep fees as low as possible and is run purely by volunteers from the Island.
This is a good place to visit and this year moves are afoot to extend activities for children/teens.

“Fantastic museum .. not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014

A gem of a museum developed by the community, depicts the life and times past living on the Island, farming and fishing, school days, football and its history. Here you will learn the incredible story of the internet of 1858, the development of the first long distance telegraph cable connecting Valentia to Newfoundland. Notice on your way from Portmagee you will pass over a swing bridge .. the centre rotates through 90 degrees to allow boats navigate to Cahirciveen .. not too many examples of these left. Drive on further and you reach Valentia slate mine whose slates grace the Houses of Parliament in London, Westminster Abbey and many more of the grand period municipal buildings ... now a working slate mine . Try out some of the walking trails ..... Bray Head loop or Culoo coastline loop .. incredible sea views and vistas .. great views of the mighty Skelligs too. Try the chocolates .. Check this out because you will want to come back, again and again.

“Heritage centre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013

This is located just outside of the main centre of Knightstown. Its a small venue but it contains lots of information about the island. The only negative, is its so quiet in there it almost feels like a library and even your footsteps across the floor echo quite loudly.

In one room there is a school style set up, which was fun for the kids to sit at a desk, laid out with a slate board and chalk. There is loads of information around the walls, but as interesting as the information is, children may get board, as its a lot to try and take in.

The other room contained a lot of information about the transatlantic cable. There are also dvd's playing on a tv, showing the Island and people from the Island telling there memories, and some with music. The tv was on quiet low, so it was difficult to hear what was being said. These were for sale, and as lovely as they were I felt that they were overpriced, there was no discount for buying more than one etc.

You can't take photos in here, which is a shame, as sometimes it is better to film the information you are interested in and read it later.

Being a small venue, your visit won't take that long, but its worthwhile trying to find some time to call in, the price is a bit steep, when you take into account the size of the place and the length of time you are realistically likely to spend there, in comparison to other activities on the island for similar prices.
