Purely by accident, we happened on this Fort - it was too late to finish the Ring of Kerry by the time we reached Cahersiveen, so we had a look on the map for interesting sites in the area. This was marked on an OSI map, just West of Cahersiveen, via a side-road off Main Street and past the famous Cahersiveen Barracks.
The only way to describe it is fabulous. Part of the original is still there but it has been reconstructed. The whole design is ingenious - the inner sanctum where a fire could be lit and people could stay warm, the outer sanctum with the thick walls and steps, the outer wall higher in the direction of the prevailing winds.
Definately worth a visit.
