“An old hotel but a good one.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

We stayed at this hotel in late August, 2012. It is located centrally in the town of Clifden, Connemara. We arrived earl morning before our room was ready, however we were able to leave our luggage with reception so we could get on with our touring. The hotel itself is older but it is very comfortable; the staff is extremely accommodating. We had a room facing the Main Street which was bright, clean and met our needs. The full Irish breakfast, which was included in the room price, was unbelievably good (even the " black pudding" which I usually hate). I would certainly stay there again. Overall, great value for money.

There is only one bad thing I can say about the hotel. It is located next door to a jewellery shop which my wife immediately visited.

I am loath to mention the dated decor and the shabby worn furniture in the reception area along with the fact that the bar didn't open until after 6 o'clock the one euro per hour on street parking Mon - Fri until 6 because we have had one of the best meals we have enjoyed for quite some time. I have never tasted more succulently rare lamb cutlets in my life - Cromleach Lodge comes close but it is still second to here. this meal is worth suffering all of the above for - it is that good. All three courses were excellent as was the service. Breakfast was also very good with the tastiest white pudding I have ever eaten (apparently it is made by a local butcher) Would we stay here again - wife says no, I say aye - would we eat here again - most definitely. If you like rare lamb you have to try this dish as it is sumptuous. The rooms were clean, spacious and warm. Dont forget to book the restaurant as it is very busy. Enjoy

Room Tip: The lighting is very dim for reading in bed.

I stayed here last weekend and the staff could not have been more helpful the hotel was full and staff kept going all weekend. It is perfectly placed in the centre of town and walking distance to everywhere. The breakfast was first class and Dinner excellent, even though a little dated the rooms were clean and well kept, I will certaintly return.

Greeted by smiles, served wih smiles, situated at the centre of Cliftden, ideal for evening stroll or base for exploring the area. Impressed by hotel, although dated, clean and all that one would need. Rooms large, clean and well serviced. Service always with a smile, compensate for slow service in the resturant, but quality shone through. Visit again, YES. Loved the turn back in in time...

Absolutely delicious food from a varied and very reasonably priced menu. Beautify presented, empty plates all round! Didnt stay in the hotel so can't comment on rooms but did wander in to the bar. Mullarkies is a great live music venue, seen some really good bands while we stayed in clifden and hope to be back again some day.

This is an old building in the heart of Clifden town. A warm welcome awaited us at reception upon arrival and we found every member of staff throughout our stay to be very friendly and accommodating.

The rooms are large and spacious and the beds are huge, not to mention extremely comfy!
We had a huge ensuite also with a bath and the room had a flatscreen TV, hairdryer and tea&coffee making facilities.

It is a 3* hotel and although it has a lovely old world charm about it, it could do with some new carpets and the floorboards were a bit creaky!

I really liked the decor in the bar, candles on the tables, textured wallpapers and artwork and some cool photos on the walls which gives it great character.

The breakfast was delicious and there was very little grease in the fry, it was clean and tasty. A nice selection of cereals and fruit too.

There is no onsite car park but as we arrived on a Sunday, parking was free and we got a space outside the hotel easily enough. Parking is free until 11.30am on weekdays which gave us ample time to have breakfast and get checked out.

Overall, a great location with friendly staff and lovely big comfy rooms at a reasonable price.

I stayed here for one night midweek while travelling around Connemara with work.

The rooms included a TV, telephone, plenty of drawer and wardrobe space and tea making facilities. The bathroom was ample size. Hair-dryers and irons available from reception.

My bed was comfortable and my room looked out onto a small, quaint courtyard which ensure a good quiet night's sleep.

The hotel itself is very old and the room I stayed in had not seen much modernisation. While I personally liked the charm, it might not be suited to anyone. The room was a good size but not huge. My bed, on the other hand, was huge and also very comfy. It had authentic furniture that was decades old and proper old fashioned throws on the bed. It reminded me of staying in my granny's attic bedroom in rural Ireland, even down to the drawers being lined with old-fashioned wall paper!
I also had a look around a colleagues room and while this room was also quite rustic, his room was much bigger and it looked like the paintwork and curtains had been renewed more recently than mine.

Breakfast was good. There was no late/residents' bar(although this may have been because it was a quiet night mid-week), but the foyer are had some comfortable sofas where we were able to stay and chat as late as we wanted and we were offered drinks by the barman before he closed up the bar. The receptionist was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

A few notes for travellers.
Firstly there is no lift so this would not be right place for you if you have any mobility issues. Bring your own water and toiletries as water was not provided in the room and the toiletries were limited to soap bars and two-in-one showergel/shampoo.
Also the hotel provides free wifi which is good on the ground floor but can be hit and miss in the rooms.

Over all, this is not a luxury hotel, but it has good old-fashioned Irish charm and will surely provide a welcoming and pleasant stay.

Room Tip: If you want a quite night, ask for one that looks out onto the small cemented courtyard. If wifi is...
