“Front of House just awful”
Reviewed August 20, 2013 via mobile

I should point out that we did not sample the food at The Moorings as we left before any was offered. The waiter who 'greeted' us on arrival was so unutterably awful - no welcome, no smile, no interest. He managed to direct the question 'three?' at us by inserting the word into a conversation he was having with another member of staff. He didn't even listen to our response. He bounded up the stairs and disappeared behind a separating wall - I suppose to deposit the menus on the table at which he intended us to sit. He then pushed past us on the stairs as he launched himself down to 'welcome' more poor unsuspecting diners. When my wife expressed some uncertainty as to where our table could be, and our waiter had not quite disappeared from view or earshot, he replied "I thought you were following me." We were. We just couldn't keep up. A brief glance at my wife and daughter told me everything I needed to know about their expectation of this dining experience based upon the waiter's ineptitude. We left. He watched us leave - then he, presumably, ran off again, hotly pursued by some other customers. I think he is in the wrong line of work. We went to Guy's Bar instead. Much, much better from the first few seconds. It would have been difficult to be worse.

“A manager/owner who doesnt pay attention when taking an order”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

We visited this restaurant on a busy Sunday night. The place looks well and we got a nice table but the service wasnt great. The manager/owner seemed completed distracted when taking orders meaning we had to give much of our order twice as he spent his time either watching the door or his staff. It made us feel unimportant and did not compare favourably to any of the other restaurants we visited in Clifden. Food was over-priced and was average to say the least. The management of this restaurant have a lot to learn about good customer service!

“Well-cooked fish”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

We called in to The Moorings on a night when we were late (after 9pm) and every other restaurant in Clifden seemed to be busy. Fortunately we got a table and were impressed afterwards at the friendly service and the quality of the food. Tables are a tad tight and the staircase to the upper dining room is narrow (could be too narrow for some). Once seated, we enjoyed good salmon and prawn starters followed by excellent monkfish and hake. The bread and butter pudding dessert seemed commercial rather than home made but was OK. A limited wine list won't please wine buffs but we found an acceptable white. All in all, a nice meal.
