We discovered Conneely's early in our trip - and returned there several more times in less than a week.My husband enjoyed the drinks (he had a Smithwick's with a Guinness head there - a first for him - as well as a whiskey he'd never tried before.) I loved the cocoa - real cocoa, made with hot milk, topped with foam, and dusted with cocoa powder. Ask Martin to make it - and eat your heart out, Starbucks!
Conneely's has 2 sessions of traditional Irish music every night, and the first set starts at 6:30pm, much earlier than most other pubs, which don't start their live music until 9:00 or 10:00.
According to my husband, the food was good - and very reasonably priced. During our stay, I spent most of my half of our meal budget on shopping, so I pretty much survived on seafood chowder and brown bread and had it everywhere we went. Conneely's chowder was easily the best I had all week.
What kept us coming back, though, wasn't the food or the drinks or even the music. It was the people. Martin, Declan, Mark, and the rest at the bar could not have been friendlier to a pair of tourists who decided to "adopt" their establishment for a week.
Tip: go in the early afternoon, when there aren't many customers yet, and chances are you'll find a few of the musicians for that evenings session having lunch and swapping stories. When the bartenders join in, things get REALLY interesting! Just listen and enjoy!
If your travel plans include Clifden, Conneely's (with its bright, warm interior and spectacular view of the bay from the patio out back) is a must-go!
