A key highlight of our recent trip to Connemara was completing the ‘twelve bens introductory hike’ with Paul Phelan. As regular visitors to Connemara this had always been a challenge that we wanted to complete however had never actually got around to organising. The Clifden tourist information centre provided us with Paul Phelan’s contact details & as he was highly recommended we did not hesitate to contact him. Paul advised prior to the trip that we would need to wear walking boots; we then realised how unprepared we were as 2 members within our party had not brought them with them. Paul very kindly provided us with some walking boots which we were extremely grateful for as without these the hike would not have been possible & we would have been extremely disappointed. Once we embarked on our hike it soon became apparent that the walking boots were a necessity as the terrain was very slippery & bogy so we were delighted that Paul was able to offer this service. Paul also provided us with walking poles which again we felt were an essential item. Overall our experience was fantastic & we would like to recommend that anyone visiting Connemara who is a keen hiker should take on this challenge as there is some stunning scenery to be seen. We would also highly recommend Paul Phelan as he was extremely knowledgeable about the area, was a friendly guy & we were comforted that he was trained in mountain skills & first aid. If are considering this trip then ensure that you are well equipped with waterproof gear, water supplies & most importantly hire Paul as with the terrain there is an element of risk. Also if you are thinking that trainers are suitable for this hike then think again as walking boots (preferably with ankle support) are a must! Thank you to Paul for making this such an enjoyable experience- we will see you on our next trip when we hope to further explore the twelve bens.
