Hmm, what to say about this place. Certainly it is a romantic place in a beautiful surrounding. We had a larger room there, which was really beautiful. Nice old furniture, books, fireplace, large bathroom and a fantastic large bed. The hotel is really authentic, although from the closerby the outside doesn't really look much like a castle, but more like a large box with some castle-like ornaments. Still, certainly lovely!!! The food we had was good, but nothing special. Also breakfast is ok, but nothing special. The price was definitely too high for what you got, we paid 200euro. I guess it's the best you will get in Clifden, even though the place is full of very old retired people. So for youngsters it may not be the best place to stay. Anyhow, if you go there don't forget to watch the sunset a few miles down the road (take the Sky road!).

I have stayed here a couple of times now and plan to go back at least once a year.

I have opted to pay for the upgrade to one of the Superior Rooms each time and it is well worth it. The Superior Room I have been lucky to get is in the tower and has a lovely sitting area with a gas fire, fabulous bathroom, great four poster bed and lovely views with a stream running out the back.

The food is always delicious, go with an empty stomach and you will not be disappointed.

The staff have always been very friendly and make you feel at home the minute you arrive .
It is in a beautiful location and even when the weather isn't the best it is still a great place to be.

Great value, great location, delicious food, beautiful rooms and staff that make you feel like you have known them for years.

Would recommend this to everyone.

We have stayed at the Abbeyglen a few times and absolutely love it. It is well worth paying for an upgrade to a Superior Room as this can mean a room in the tower or a bedroom plus sitting room - both great in the winter as some of them even have a gas fire.
If you like a comfortable, family-run, hotel with great food and set in beautiful countryside, that has good old-fashioned singsong type entertainment with the bonus of staff who really look after you it is worth your while visiting here.

Just a tip - the first time we stayed here we had a fantastic room, large, great views of the 12 Bens etc. The next time we got a 3-star type room with no views at all.

It seems that we must have got lucky or been on a deal the first time because we got a superior room. That seems to be why some people on this review board love the rooms and some hate them. There's a massive difference between the normal room and the superior.

Hope it helps!

My husband and I decided to have just a few days away within Ireland to mark our first wedding anniversary. We decided on the Abbeyglen Hotel in Clifden Connemara because it sounded romantic and it was located in a part of the country that we had never been to before. We got lucky with the weather and the scenery was breath taking .. our mood was retained throughout our over night stay at the Abbeyglen by the friendly staff, great room, wonderful food, pitch and putt in the hotel grounds which was fun and free - even when we lost a ball...
The hotel may not be for everyone if you don't like a real country house feel which is a bit unkempt round the edges, but some high rollers must like it because one of guests arrived piloting his own helicopter!

If you here castle you think about an old builduing of several centuries. I found this castle hotel wasn't very old. The rooms are verry well decorated, but you should insist to have a room with a view in the valley (marvelous) and not to the back of the hotel. This changes everything. There is only one salon to sit down, the bar has an atmosphere of an garage, the jacuzzi don't give any desire to get in and the outdoor swimming pool is in a mess. But in the breakfast room you feel really like in a castle. I recommand to compare carefully the room rates of several Internet sites, travel agents and the hotel itself because I payed to much for our rooms.
