After recent reviews on internet was suprised at comments of Abbeyglen when i stayed there the service and food was excellent. The brothers that run hotel giving the place a great welcoming atmosphere, not the type of hotel you would go to if you want a slick modern feel it has an old fashion charm to it which i liked very much, would recomend it to anyone who wants to relax and take life at a slower pace.

we are regular guests of the abbeyglen and return year after year. I felt the need to post a review after reading recent negative comments on this site.

Reception:
I found all reception staff to be highly efficient and friendly. It is rare these days to find a place where you are recognised as a return guest and are welcomed by name. We were escorted to our room by a member of the reception staff while the luggage porter brought our bags up to the room. On our way up we were informed of breakfast and dinner times, offered a menu.

Housekeeping:
The room was clean and the housekeeping staff were unintrusive. Not once during our stay were we disturbed by housekeepers looking to clean the room. It is also nice to see people who are friendly and greet you when you pass them in the corridor.

Note regarding the staff:
Abbeyglen hosts an international team of people which makes all guests from any country feel welcome.

Dining:
Dinner is served between 7.15 and 9 pm with no need to book a specific time. This really adds to the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel. The gourmet dinner as always was exceptional. The menu was extensive with vegetarian options and considering my wife is a coeliac, the chefs were more than happy to prepare for her gluten free foods.
The waiting staff were quick and efficient and always smiling especially Ben and Ratna from Bali.

Rooms and general decor:
The whole hotel has a wonderful old world charm considering the low prices of their low season midweek breaks(for example €249 per person sharing + service charge for Five nights including five dinners, bed and breakfast, nightly entertainment, complementary afternoon tea and access to amenities)
The superior room we were in boasted four poster bed, open fire, fresh flowers and a large bathroom with old fashioned free standing bath, two sinks and walk in shower. For only €75 per person extra spread over the five nights it is well worth the upgrade.

Entertainment:
There's musicians in the bar every night who greatly encourage guest participation and this creates a great sing-a-long evening. Brian Hughes(the manager) is also a wonderful entertainer but mostly performs during the weekend. On Tuesday nights you are treated to an Irish Night, whose main feature is traditional irish music(yes there is a leprechaun but the delight on the faces of the guests are priceless. Photos taken by the owner Paul Hughes are delivered free of charge to your room the same evening.)

All in all a wonderful break away from the kids. It is worth travelling all the way from Dublin for this hidden treasure and we have already booked our next trip.

Merry Christmas.

Jim and Carol.

The drive to Clifden across the 12 Bens was incredible and the setting for this hotel is quite something. What a disappointment then to find this breeze-block (cinder block?) monstrosity at out destination, pretending to be a castle. Maybe our own fault, but we felt ripped off...would recommend staying in a good B&B down the Sky Road and saving the money for a real castle and real luxury another time.

We stayed at Abbeyglen Castle Hotel for two nights in October and we were very pleased with the large, clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated rooms. The staff was very plesant and the owner Paul and his brother worked hard to make everyones stay enjoyable. This was our second trip to Ireland in the past four years and we plan to include Abbeyglen Castle Hotel for a stay on our next trip.

Good deals in October, 5 nights including breakfast, afternoon tea/coffess, scones etc and evening meal for £207(sterling) per person. Standard room large and with 6 foot wide bed.

Great atmosphere in hotel, all staff and owners very friendly; service excellent, obviously staff have been well trained. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Great choices for breakfast; evening meals were first class; pianist plays in restuarant each evening. Hotel owned by two brothers who take a hands on approach in the day to day running of the hotel

Piano bar each evening; but plenty of rooms in the ground floor to relax if you prefer. No smoking permitted in hotel.

I understand hotel has recently regained its 4 star rating. The hotel would have been very grand when first built and attracted many famous actors/ celeberaties/ politicians etc for stays over the years. The hotel is a little 'tired' in places and would still need refurbishment but don't let this put you off if you are happy with a slightly old fashioned type but well run hotel

We had nowhere booked on arriving in Clifden and took a chance on Abbeyglen Castle. We arrived early in the morning and without asking were up-graded rooms. OK the price was expensive for 2 but the food that night was fantastic (included in the price as was breakfast) and made it well worth it. I still dream of the dessert layout. On that note not many other hotels offer free afternoon tea and buns as Abbeyglen do. The room was great and I slept like a baby. Found it very hard to get out of the bed the following morning.

Only one downside and that was the 9-hole pitch and putt course in front of the castle. Lack of maintenance left the course more than a challenge. A putter can be used for the whole course as ties and holes are very close.

All in all the stay was one of the highlights of the holiday.

Abbeyglen Castle . Warm and friendly welcome by staff at arrival, our suite was enormous, elegantly and tastefully decorated with king size brass bed, lounge, mini-bar, air-conditioning, small table and chairs overlooking a pretty stream and garden. The restaurant was situated in an elevated position overlooking the garden. The meal was fabulous and wine list extensive. Overall a very enjoyable stay. (book the suite as other rooms looked rather small in comparsion.) Its not really a castle just built like one. We had a lovely stay here...food was great although service was extremely slow..they also kept taking our wine away before finishing it.

Our room was great so I guess thats what made our stay special.

PROS: Book suite. Good food and restaurant.

CONS: Not really a castle. Pool looked disgusting full of green murky stuff.
