The place could REALLY do with a physical facelift . Otherwise it is 5 star for all of :

Ambience
Staff
Food

which are all 5 star grade by Irish standards . Could not fault a minute of it bar the state of the bedrooms.

They are not dirty or noisy but they are old and cold . Anyone staying there between now and easter should ask for a hot water bottle an hour before bedtime.

But that said it is well worth the visit . You do not get this old school ambience and attention to PEOPLE very much any more .

I am writing to strongly complain about this hotel.
We had with the greatest intention booked to stay over the New year period at this hotel. Having booked and paid for a 3 day break i parted with a £520.00 deposit.
As i mentioned we wanted to have a wonderful New Year's break, however due to work committments, i telephoned the hotel in the beginning of November to ask if they would kindly allow us to change our dates for spending the 3 days there. I realised there were no refunds, and i was not looking for one, but i was informed the manger would contact me.
Two weeks later i telephoned again and once again i was informed the manager would contact me. In late November and early December i telephoned again to speak to the manager, once again i was told he would contact me, as i mentioned for a hard working person to have £520.00 taken from his account and not be offered another date i find totally unacceptable, and also to be completely ignored and not receive a telephone call back i find disgusting.
I am not a person who complains, and this is the first time i have ever written a bad remark in a hotel review.
I would like to say to anyone who is thinking of booking to stay at this hotel to consider the implications if for any reason you have to cancel if you would be happy in just handing over to them the sum of £520.00.
All attempts over the last month or so to contact the manager have met with negative results.

I am writing this review after an unbelievable night out in the abbeyglen. From the moment we arrived we received complimentary tea/coffee scones/cakes,a welcome treat coming in from the cold.Rooms were big and cosy with working fireplace and large bathroom.Very comfortable.Brian hughes the manager
will be on first name basis with all guests. Was pleasantly
surprised at dinner menu,i sampled smoked salmon and fillet steak myself with a selection of desserts.Delicious.Forgot to mention complimentary champagne before!Great craic was had by all after in the bar with cosy fire and brian himself on the piano. Was there with 6 others and we all had a great nite. After breakfast strolled around clifden before heading back to Galway city, back to normality. All ready planning another visit after xmas.

Well Well - What can I say. We have just returned from a fantastic trip to the Abbeyglen. I can see why it is the number 1 place to stay in Clifden. I think the bad reviewer must have been staying at a different hotel or is a competitor!! We had the most fantastic room. Solid wooden floors, 4 poster bed, tv, champagne on arrival, fabulous bathroom with a huge bath - it was the perfect getaway. The staff were unbelievable - they could not do enough for us. It was like a home away from home. The weather was pretty bad and we had forgotten rain jackets but lo and behold the girls at reception had spare ones. They just though of everything. My self and other half went for the most amazing massage in the spa. It was fab!! Came back to the hotel to have dinner on Sat night and things just didn't stop getting better. The wine choice was fab, dinner was just devine and the craic that we had in the bar afterwards. I haven't danced and laughed so much in a long time.
Breakfast the next morning was again scrumptious with such a huge choice and again, the staff could not do enough for us. We had heard from friends about this place but doubted it could be as good as they said!! How wrong we were. The Abbeyglen will be from now on - our "special occasion" hotel. I just can't wait to go back.

We splurged and stayed at this castle hotel for one night booked through expedia. I would recommend booking directly through the hotel in off season as they were giving discounted rates which we did not recieve.
BUT - This place was lovely - great walking grounds, views from our rooms, nice facilities, ample space in sitting room, bed and bathroom. It looked newish outside and our room had a gas fireplace in the sitting room. We felt welcomed by the staff who were very helpful and provided us with a walking map of the area. The rooms were nice, with enough charm that you didn't feel you were staying in a disneyland castle. The breakfast included was delicious, we couldn't stop talking about it for days afterwards. There were many locals in the bar and at tea time who were staying also staying as guests - which to me, means it must be good! In our mid-30's we were definitely the youngest couple there but this never bothers us.

We just returned from our trip to Ireland (October 17 - 27) and our 2-night stay at Abbeyglen Castle. What a disppointment. This is NOT a 4-star hotel. Our room was old and musty; the bedspread and carpet was ripped and old; the towels were small and worn out; several bulbs were missing or not working in the lamps; long, black human hair was all over in our bathroom from the room cleaner. There were no washcloths in the room upon check-in so I asked for two and was told "we don't use them here." What? This is a hotel that is going strictly off "location, location, location" and not paying attention to value, quality, or customer service.

Great location and stunning views. Room was good although due to the peat the bath water looked a bit brown in colour! Restaurant was good and the staff were great. Complimentary afternoon tea and cakes when we arrived was unexpected but welcomed. We went for a drink in the bar after dinner to find on a Monday night that a guy came and played the piano and sang old Irish songs soon accompanied by various guests till gone midnight. Great atmosphere but not sure we could stand the pace if that is what happened on a Monday night goodness only knows what happens at the weekend! Also mad parrott by reception welcomes you from sitting on top of his cage when you arrive and wolfwhistles everyone who sings in the bar! Thoroughly recommend for a true Irish fun stay!
