This was a great Hotel! From the people to the scenery even the bird was cool! This was our last stop before returning to Dublin to fly out. We had been going full tilt for the last 8 days and received a much needed break when we arrived in Clifden. Our room had a trickling stream waterfall right outside the window which we left open all night so we could listen to the water. Great! The first night we ate dinner in the castle restaurant which was very nice and relaxing. Also, the meet and greet with champane and smoked salmon was good. During the day we took a drive on the Sky road which like the rest of Ireland had some beautiful views. That night we had Indian food in town. It was good, nice change. After, we went to EJ Kings and listened to some music then went back to the hotel and wow! The bar was hopping with people. We sat at the bar and sang songs and of course drank plenty.
Overall very fun!

Room Tip: I can't remember the room number but it was the second to last room on the first floor facing th...

Just home from 2 nights in the glorious west of ireland where we paid another return visit to one of my favourite places in Ireland - the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel.

Cannot recommed this place highly enough in terms of warmth of welcome, customer care and old-school hospitality provided by everybody on site from owners Paul and Brian, the ever-fabulous Rodger in the Bar, Monika in the restaurant and Gilbert the resident 'duty manager'/reception assistant / parrot.

The hotel itself is slightly creaky, laden with candles and atmosphere and a perfect bolt-hole on a cold winters evening. Complimentary Pre-dinner champagne reception in the bar is a lovely touch and the chowder in the restaurant is fabulous. Make your way back to the bar after dinner and relax with a drink around the grand piano while enjoying a sing-song with a mixture of locals and visitors.

I can't wait to get back !!

If you get the opportunity, visit. you won't regret it.

Of the four castle hotels we stayed at while visiting Ireland, there is no question this one was the most lively. Our travel agent listed the location as Galway, but its really an hour away in Clifden. The property itself is quite the whimsical and eclectic collection of designs, and the hotel itself is like a rabbit warren, with addition after addition, ramping up and down, and even some "hidden" corridor rooms shooting off to the side. While the property might not win any awards for upscale elegance, it more than makes up for this in friendliness. Every day the Castle parrot mascot is out in the reception area, greeting guests as they go by. Guests take great delight in teaching the parrot new words and phrases. Dinners there are met with supreme exuberance. Expect some bursting into song and real camaraderie among all the guests and innkeepers. Nightlife at the hotel pub goes into the wee hours and often includes some life singing and guitar playing. I don't think I've ever felt so welcome at a hotel. The hotel restaurant is very affordable also.

Room Tip: You might want to request a room a bit further from the lobby because of both the talking parrot and...

The road from Killareny to Clifden was an all day event as we visited the Cliffs of Mohr on our way. Clifden is a small but picture perfect fishing village of 1500 in the county of Galaway. This is the farthest west you can get in Ireland and the coastline and Aran Isles in the distance are spectacular. The Abbey Glen is a happy and festive place to stay. The bar is hopping and the owner is a great people person . A flag of each guests home country is placed on your table in the dining room. Food , drinks and the dessert buffet are great. A little pricey at 55 euros each. There is a small spa on the property and the girls who attended to us for our facials , massages and seaweed baths were professional and personable. Yes I said seaweed bath, despite the initial smell, you will have the most hydrated and softest skin of your life.... try it for 10 euro's it is a deal. The castle is also home to the talking parrot namede Gilbert . He loves the ladies so be prepared to be whistled at..... alot !!!! An amazing irish experience, worth the drive . Take the SKY road walk ( or drive ) its about 12km long, but really worth it. LOVED THIS PLACE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We wanted a break for a bit of r & r, we certainly got the relaxation, not so sure about the rest! The hotel is very quirky, I loved our room complete with fire and four poster - very romantic! I loved Gilbert the parrot, I think he is more relaxed in the evening better not to try and stroke him in the morning! Food was great and as for the entertainment, that was what I meant about not so sure about the rest. There was a great atmosphere in the bar on Friday night, wonderful piano playing and singing from staff and guests alike. Paul (who I kept calling Alan - apologies!) and Brian are excellent hosts and certainly know how to look after you. Monika in the restaurant was also very good, remembering my liking for a large wine glass! We had a great time.

From the minute we arrived, our stay at Abbeyglen castle was the highlight of our trip to Beautiful Ireland!
The rooms were large with updated baths but gave a "castle like"feel.
The food was fabulous with a wide selection at breakfast and dinner.
But the outstanding difference was the staff.
Gilbert the parrot, entertained us with his little sayings.
Reception was very helpful and patient with us Americans. Roger, in the bar, kept us entertained and treated us like royalty. Brian, the owner of the castle, told wonderful stories of the area, over afternoon champagne.
All in our group agreed,we would haved loved to stayed longer and that Abbeyglen castle was the highlight of our trip!

Room Tip: A room in the front has marvelous views of the grounds and bay

We booked a 3 day break in Abbeyglen including one evening meal. Our check in was quick. We were given a huge room. Really two rooms in one. A seating area in one room and a twin bed with bathroom in the other room. The room and the castle itself is older style showing signs of wear but clean.

We were invited to the Champagne Reception in the bar at 6.30pm, they also served smoked salmon and brie canapés. All very enjoyable. They give a talk on the area and the history of the building etc.

I liked the food in the castle. Breakfast was the usual and very tasty. Dinner was included one night with a good choice - I had salmon and my friend had Cod. I also tried the steak and the lobster ( extra supp.) but good value and quality, on the second and third night. Both were good and well priced. They do a good deal one course for €15 or starter and main for €19.95 if you are not having the set dinner. We had dinner on all three nights as it was nice. Everyone seemed to mix and the music got people chatting to each other.

Music in the bar each evening is lovely with the lights low and the candles lighting. Not to mention the wonderful turf fire blazing away. So Enjoyable. The staff and owners were very welcoming and attentive to us. Its full of people who return again and again. It has atmosphere not to mention the Generosity with complimentary tea and scones on arrival to champagne reception. We found nice quiet corners to read and relax. Its within walking distance of Clifden. We did the sky road walk. Its easier if you start it in Clifden and walk around. Abbeyglen is quirky, but people do seem to return again and again, the manager Gilbert is a real hoot!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the town of Clifden.
