“Abbyglen was the best..”

From the minute we arrived, our stay at Abbeyglen castle was the highlight of our trip to Beautiful Ireland!
The rooms were large with updated baths but gave a "castle like"feel.
The food was fabulous with a wide selection at breakfast and dinner.
But the outstanding difference was the staff.
Gilbert the parrot, entertained us with his little sayings.
Reception was very helpful and patient with us Americans. Roger, in the bar, kept us entertained and treated us like royalty. Brian, the owner of the castle, told wonderful stories of the area, over afternoon champagne.
All in our group agreed,we would haved loved to stayed longer and that Abbeyglen castle was the highlight of our trip!

Room Tip: A room in the front has marvelous views of the grounds and bay

We booked a 3 day break in Abbeyglen including one evening meal. Our check in was quick. We were given a huge room. Really two rooms in one. A seating area in one room and a twin bed with bathroom in the other room. The room and the castle itself is older style showing signs of wear but clean.

We were invited to the Champagne Reception in the bar at 6.30pm, they also served smoked salmon and brie canapés. All very enjoyable. They give a talk on the area and the history of the building etc.

I liked the food in the castle. Breakfast was the usual and very tasty. Dinner was included one night with a good choice - I had salmon and my friend had Cod. I also tried the steak and the lobster ( extra supp.) but good value and quality, on the second and third night. Both were good and well priced. They do a good deal one course for €15 or starter and main for €19.95 if you are not having the set dinner. We had dinner on all three nights as it was nice. Everyone seemed to mix and the music got people chatting to each other.

Music in the bar each evening is lovely with the lights low and the candles lighting. Not to mention the wonderful turf fire blazing away. So Enjoyable. The staff and owners were very welcoming and attentive to us. Its full of people who return again and again. It has atmosphere not to mention the Generosity with complimentary tea and scones on arrival to champagne reception. We found nice quiet corners to read and relax. Its within walking distance of Clifden. We did the sky road walk. Its easier if you start it in Clifden and walk around. Abbeyglen is quirky, but people do seem to return again and again, the manager Gilbert is a real hoot!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the town of Clifden.

If your trip to Ireland consists of one B&B after another, you should treat yourself to something different. I recommend the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel. Two years ago we stayed there, and we looked forward to a return visit. Much to our delight, the second stay exceeded the first. Brian Hughes, the self styled "Struggling Hotelier" is a fine host, warmly greeting regulars, and making newcomers feel at home. The rooms are large, very clean, and comfortable. (Tip: treat yourself to a long afternoon soak in the oversize tub.) Breakfast is bountiful, and we enjoyed dinner so much the first night, we dined at the Abbey on our second night rather than going into Clifden, even though it is but a short walk to the town center. The Abbeyglen is an ideal base to explore the Clifden area, from Kylemore Abbey, and Connemara National Park to the magnificent Sky Road on which the Abbeyglen sits. We will be back someday. Myself and my husband stayed in the AbbeyGlen for two nights for our honeymoon. I had read alot of revieponws about the hotel and was really looking forward experiencing the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. I have to say I was slightly disappointed. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly by a lovely lady on reception. When we told her it was our honeymoon she was delighted to hear it, although no room upgrade was offered (a pity). Our room was lovley a four poster bed but we were at the bottom of a hill so no sunlight could get in so the room was quite chilly. Overall the room was ok.

The most disappointing thing about this hotel was the food!!!! An amazing menu mouth watering stuff but when we got it was only lukewarm!!!! the waiters were to busy to be bothered with us so we didn't complain. there didn't seem to be any system going in the restaurant staff were all over the place not there fault there just didn't seem to be anyone in charge except some man who was to busy chatting to customers to give any direction to staff. It was help yourself to dessert if I'm blunt it was like feeding time in the zoo with some people you couldn't get near it. We didn't bother going to dinner there the next night, breakfast was just the same cold!!!!.
the grounds in the hotel are fab. the hotel i think is a hit and miss kind of place you could get it on a good week or you could get it on a bad week!!! i did use the treatment rooms there and had a fabulous massage by a lovely girl there would definitely recommend customers avail of this facility.
Would I go back??? no I wouldnt. Because it was our honey moon maybe I ws expecting a bit to much but in m opinion there is no excuse for cold food!!!1

Room Tip: If you are put at the bottom of a hill ask to change rooms!!!!!!

Champagne greeting, attentive staff, easy walk to the town square, creaky wooden floors and staircases, fireplace burning with soft leather chairs to curl up in with a good book, fabulous breakfast and dinners, sing along in the pub—all add up to a great hotel. Roger is a blast! You’ll see if you take my advice. The rooms are basic good comfort for our two-night stay. Gate1 did great with our fly and drive package of Ireland. The Abbeyglen lets you get closer to Ireland.

Room Tip: Ask for a southern view so you can see the bay.

This place is wonderful. You may get to stay in an inn with nicer rooms, but the overall experience was very special because of the staff. Paul and Roger are two of the nicest and funniest people you will ever have the pleasure to meet. Their approach to customer service is unique, and hilarious. The food is really good, both at breakfast and at dinner.

Thanks, Abbeyglen, for a most enjoy able two days!

"Unlike Daisy O", our experience was wonderful. We were greeted warmly by staff and Wilbur the Parrot! I walked the grounds and my wife and I walked up to the original Clifden Castle. RailTours Ireland booked this hotel for us as part of the nine day Titanic Tour. That included in addition to the stay at the hotel and 1/2 day guided tour of the area by a local historian/anthropologist and farmer which was wonderful. The Hotel has many quaint features which we enjoyed. Dinner was included via voucher from RailTours and was very good. Clifden is as far west as you can get on the western coast of Ireland, but if you are in the Connemara area, possibly visiting Kylemore Abby, a visit to Clifden and a stay at the hotel is definitely worthwhile.
