Rooms were great, people and service was great couldn't ask for more. Brian Hughes the manager was great and even had the kitchen make us breakfast when we had a late morning on our way out the door after checking out.. Bartenders and other staff were all very polite and helpful, rooms were clean and pretty what else would you want. i totally agree with poster below this one.

Champagne reception was great and it was flowing! The singsong was as usual top class. I'm looking forward to the next visit

I do not normally write reviews on Trip Advisor, however after reading the review left by Elmear M, a mere few days after we checked out, I feel it's important for the general public to know what our experience was like in comparison.
The Abbeyglen Castle is not just somewhere to plonk your head down in Connemara, it is an exceptional, Irish experience.
It is a shame to read Elmear M's review, as my partner and I stayed two days before them and feel like we were treated like royalty from the minute we drove onto the estate. (To be honest, it started once I called to make the reservation with Eleonore, who secured us a glorious room with an affordable rate).
We were greeted by the reception team in the warm, friendly, quiet lobby and welcomed accordingly. After a quick check-in, Tommy (a lovely Polish gentleman) rushed out to collect our (tonnes of!) luggage from the car and brought it to the room.
THE ROOM. We had a an absolutely stunning castle room. A comfortable four poster bed, a beautiful waterfall right out our window, a claw foot bath, and wonderful facilities including iron/hairdryer/tea.
After settling in, we wandered around the castle and found out they were serving complementary afternoon tea/coffee with fresh homemade scones. YUM! We sat next to the fire and chatted away other guests. We were then invited to pre-dinner drinks at the bar, which were also were complementary! Procesco was flowing and there was a great buzz.
During dinner that evening we were joined but a accordion and guitarist, lovely music to accompany our delicious meal. The atmosphere in the dining hall was fantastic. We were looked after by our efficient, funny and incredibly competent waitress and waiter, Alice and John. The hotelier dropped by the table making sure we were enjoying our meal. He learnt and remembered both of our names and where we were from (he even put a NZ flag on the table!). We felt this was a really nice touch.
After dinner we went out to the Clifton Village to listen to some Trad Music but didn't realise how much we were missing out on back at the Abbeyglen! Arriving back (thinking we were going to head to bed) we found the bar lively and welcoming! To our complete surprise, most of the guests we saw at dinner were sitting around singing lovely Irish love lilts, reciting poetry and telling jokes. We were delighted to join in and even sung a few (New Zealand) tunes our selves. We have been touring around Ireland for 10 days and have not found that type of Craic, anywhere. This is a MUST DO for people wanting a true Irish evening. The Irish hospitality not only poured out of the wonderful staff, the guests at the Castle were equally welcoming and really showed us the true meaning of the word 'Craic'!
Breakfast in the morning was served until ten and it was great to see all the chaps we were with on the previous evening. There was a fantastic selection of hot and cold food and the service was outstanding. The hotelier handed us a very helpful map which showed us all the wonderful things to do around Connemara.
Checkout was made easy by Claire, what a helpful member of staff! She really looked after us and answered all our questions about our impending journey. Our bags were taken out to the car by Ken, who was so friendly and delightful. We were wished a safe journey by all of the staff, and even felt and little bit sad that we had to leave the comfortable and luxurious surrounding of the Abbeyglen Castle.
It is important to note that my partner and I are in our mid-twentys. Although most of the guests were 50+, we couldn't have asked for a better experience.
We highly, highly recommended the Abbeyglen to people of all ages, and in particular, young foreign couples who want a great time, in the heart of Connemara. The Best In The West.
We stayed two nights and paid 129 Euro per night which included breakfast and a three course dinner on both evenings which I thought was incredibility reasonable.

Room Tip: Be prepared for serious craic.

As a girl my dream was always to stay in a castle and be treated like a queen for the day, so my boyfriend treated me to a stay here for valentines but far from royalty we were treated.we landed at the hotel after a long drive and greeted by the manager who maintained no eye contact and rhymed off sumthing and said we wud be shown to our room in a minute. within a minute we were shown to room and never asked would we like our luggage carried for us.so down we went a narrow hall and landed at our room which was an icebox....decor was nice, we had a large sitting room with a lovely gas fire which heated up the room quite well.decor was quite outdated but fitted well with the theme of a castle hotel,we had a lovely four poster bed and bed was really comfy...bathroom was quite big...shower over bath wasnt vry powerful, stains on shower curtains..we then decided to go down for our valentines dinner of which was prebooked a week in advance with booking....got there and were plonked at a table in the middle of the floor and proceded to set da table around us,,is this an idea of a reserved table??we were then greeted by the restaurant manager who kindly asked us would we like a table by the window.we then ordered the chowder of which was stone cold and sent back, then ordered a steak medium rare which was way overdone and i had the risotto,it was vry bland.we were then met by numerous waiters constantly asking had we had our starter, had we had our main course?felt very rushed to get in and out so they could let more people in. then there was a range of desserts that werent vry tasty!and then we had coffee that was stone cold.we then got up and proceded to pay for our meal, wen the staff could not find our ticket and had to ask for evrything we had.it wasnt vry satisfactory at all. On check out the next day my boyfriend was presented with a bill for 420euro..saying we had not paid for our accomodation despite my boyfriend paying for same prior to check in on his card over the phone.we were then told that they never take payment until check out which was clearly not da case. We then received a call to the room saying the accomodation HAD been paid for. they clearly had given us the wrong bill because the balance was considerably less than that.no apologies no eye contact on check out, no "how was ur stay?".oh and we had gotten breakfast to the room which was awful...stone cold and gruel for porridge,,,we certainly will NOT be staying here again..

I stayed one night over the Christmas to meet up with friends. Beautiful views, comfortable room and good food. Great entertainment in the bar with plenty of sing songs. If you can sing you will be invited to join in. Lovely friendly helpful staff. I would love to stay again.

We used Abbeyglen as our base of operations to explore Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Someone didn't look at a map! The castle is on the wrong side of Galway for those excursions! I couldn't be happier that our geography was off! Abbeyglen is a hidden gem right next to the Atlantic ocean. They helped us in with our luggage and showed us to our room walking right past the talking parrot! That night they offered us free champagne and appetizers (smoked salmon and brie on soda crackers) in honor of our first night at the castle. The food, both at breakfast and dinner, was varied and wonderful. I am not a big dessert fan but they deserve an honorable mention here with 6-7 different items each evening. The little town of Clifden is adorable (aren't all of the little towns in Ireland adorable). We had an espresso/mocha on our way out of town at Walsh's cafe (thanks TripAdvisor). Great coffee, great view, and they even had gluten free items for my wife to enjoy.
