“Great family trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2011

I've just returned from an extended family trip to the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel and have to say that I was very impressed by the whole experience. The staff were very friendly and attentive and in particular the proprietor added a new dimension to customer service. He paid attention to every group throughout dinner and could be found at all times throughout the trip to answer any queries we had. The atmosphere of the bar and restaurant were very family friendly and there was a general warmth to the whole place. The only possible thing that may be improved would be the modernization of the rooms, although for us the rooms were more than adequate and added to the ambience of the Castle.

Room Tip: Suites were available to people in our parties with kids. Children under 3 stayed free and the suite...

After reading all the fabulous reviews, my boyfriend and I decided to stay at this hotel one night over the Christmas week. We booked one of the more expensive rooms, and while comfortable and roomy, the furnishings were tired and have seen better days (definitely nowhere near what was featured on their brochure). I hate being picky, but for being a tad on the pricey end, I guess I expected more, especially when it came to paying attention to details. Our champagne on arrival was opened and poured for us, but the foil from the cork was left all over the table. We also had a "packed lunch," but for 10 euros pp, I expected more than a tired ham sandwich, an orange, an apple, and a banana. We didn't even get a drink, and it was packed in an old wine box. I wish the management had invested on better presentation. I have to commend the dinner, however, because it was absolutely delicious. My boyfriend had the steak and I had the duck confit and both were excellent. However, dessert was buffet-style. Really? It would've added more the the gourmet experience if they served it on our table in a plate. I also want to commend the lady who checked us in. It turned out that there was a celebration in Clifden that night, and as the photographer for the event, she invited us and took our photo. When we checked out, it was waiting for us at the desk. It was very sweet and unexpected. Nonetheless, over all, the place wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either, definitely not worth the almost $600 we spent. I really wanted to fall in love with this place, and you very well may fall in love with this place, if you adjust your expectations.

I've read some of the negative reviews of this remarkable place. And I've no doubt that many are accurate. (I know many are not!). But almost all miss the point of Abbeyglen Castle. This is hoteliership at its very best. Of course there are imperfections but the basics that are required of any good establishment are here in abundance: good accommodation, good food and exceptional service. We stayed for five days in December. I literally had not got out of my car when a porter appeared with a trolley to collect our luggage. We were warmly welcomed, and expected, at Reception, and were in our room (Superior - well worth the extra few euro for an additional spacious lounge) within a minute. We were later invited to afternoon tea and treated to an informal talk-in which enlightened newcomers of the history of the Castle and the possibilities of the surrounding countryside, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world (no exaggeration). Dinner followed and we were treated to a magnificent menu that tasted every bit as good as it read, with fish so fresh, it could not be bettered, or battered! This delightful schedule repeated itself over the five days of our stay so by the end I could accurately award stars for consistency as well as quality. As a considerable number of guests to Abbeyglen will be from abroad (that is, not Irish) there will be elements of the ever-present "hospitality" (advice on places to visit, some awful Irish music, sing-songs in the bar, etc.) that will not be everyone's cup of cocoa, but these can be avoided with the ease and informality that characterise this special hotel and the people who work there.
So, in summary: the food is good, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the location is spectacular, and the natives are friendly. So, what are you waiting for?

Room Tip: Ask for a superior room.

What a beautiful hotel. We had a fantastic experience here, although it was only for one night. Definitely the best customer service I have experienced to date.

From the moment we walked through the doors we felt very welcome. Every single member of staff we encountered was friendly and helpful. Being vegan we don't normally dine in restaurants due to the limited options, however the chefs at Abbeyglen made us a delicious meal that was reasonably priced. We stayed on a Tuesday which was Irish night and there was a two piece band playing traditional music throughout dinner. Afterwards they moved downstairs to the bar and continued to play until close. The bar is very cozy with an open fire, it was a really fun night.

We stayed in a Superior Room that was decorated with antique furniture and featured a four poster bed and huge spa bath. It was a lovely room, however the bathroom could have been cleaner (this was the only negative aspect of our stay).

The grounds of the hotel and the castle itself are stunning. We can't wait to come back one day - we will definitely be staying for more than one night next time!

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the hotel have the best views.

We have been going to the Abbeyglen for about 12 years and have sometimes managed to go twice a year. I wrote a review about it in 2007 but have to update my comments. We originally went as a couple and then my elderly mother started coming along too – soon followed by one of our daughters (who was in her 20s at that stage). Four years ago we had a celebration with 10 friends over quite a few days in the Abbeyglen and two of the couples have returned for holidays since. My mother, who died two years ago, loved the place and was always treated kindly – even to the extent of Brian arranging (and paying for) a taxi to bring her back to the hotel from meeting a friend in Galway. Our daughter still joins us and also at least another couple of friends and we all really enjoy ourselves.
The food is excellent each evening, although the menu has reduced in choice a little in the past year, and is followed by music and song in the welcoming bar. We love to upgrade to a suite where we have the extra comfort of a sitting room with a gas fire which is perfect when there‘s a chill in the air.
Paul and Brian make a great team and will always do their utmost to make your stay enjoyable. Each member of the staff is absolutely charming, welcoming and helpful, with warmth you don’t find in many other establishments. The Beauty and Relaxation Centre is a great asset to the hotel and Michelle is a calm and friendly therapist who makes every visit a pleasure.
We look forward to returning in the Spring when we know we will have another relaxing break in the middle of beautiful Connemara scenery.

Room Tip: If you like the idea of a sitting room and gas fire ask for an upgrade to a ground floor suite.

We got a voucher to stay in this hotel and after hearing about it and reading such great reviews we were very excited. However when we arrived we were shown to a dark small room. Neither bed side lamps worked therefore it was a choice of all lights on or complete darkness. The shower pressure was terrible and it ran from hot to cold constantly therefore not very enjoyable. I had to resort to filling the bath in the end. The bed was comfy however both of us woke throughout the night freezing turning the knob on the radiator frantically but to no avail. So we threw on a jumper. The hotel building is lovely and the staff cannot do enough for you but some of the rooms are more 2 star than 4.
We had dinner in the restaurant and although delicious we were so confused with the set up. We were shown to our seat and given a set menu with no prices displayed. We asked two members of staff how the menu worked and if there was an a la carte and they said to just pick whatever courses we wanted and we would be charged accordingly. None of them could seem to give a price. So we had 3 courses instead of the 4 on the set menu and on the day of check out were charged a whopping 110 euro. Honestly we had soups to start, one roast dinner and one salmon dinner and a dessert each?! We left this hotel impressed with the the building and the staff but everything else was a complete let down. We drove 3 and a half hours to stay in a room that was way below par and honestly we feel a little cheated out of our money for that dinner although it was tasty. We understand with a voucher we would not be entitled to the best room, but perhaps if we had a nicer one we would have returned. After that experience not a chance!

Room Tip: Stay away from any room to the back of the building.

Stayed here for a night to celebrate a birthday and the place is top class all the staff are very friendly and extremely helpful and a credit to the place.

Had dinner in the restaurant and it was top class with food and service. There was great craic in the bar after dinner and Roger is a great member of staff and made sure everything was good an asset to the hotel.

The owners of the hotel are there and offer a great service and make sure you have a good stay.

Overall a great stay and we will be back
