“Very Interesting Friary right on Golf Course!”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

Check out the old Franciscan Friary on the Adare Manor Golf Course if you get a chance. It is right across from the 2nd fairway - very worth seeing!

“Its a Lovely Church”
Reviewed June 20, 2012

Nice place to visit, so historic, so gothic!
Although not the nicest church we have visited since being in ireland (The Locke Restaurant in athlone, in a church, thats a WOW).

Really nice place, alot of history! You would need over an hour to get through it all!

Definetly worth a visit!

“The history of Ireland written in stone...”
Reviewed December 6, 2011

Adare is a beautiful village. It is interesting to imagine what it was like in the 14th. century with three important monastic settlements.
The Trinitarian Abbey or 'White Abbey' which looks like a crash between a tower house and a church is now restored as the Roman Catholic parish church.
The second is the Franciscan Abbey located in the Adare demesne which sadly is now a ruin.
The third is the Augustinian Priory or 'Black Friars Abbey' located beside the river. it was founded in 1315 by John Earl of Kildare. It was restored in the early 19th. century and is now St. Nicholas's Church of Ireland parish Church.
The chapel, like that of many ruined Abbeys throughout the country is divided in two by the base of the tower where a rood screen once stood.
The original 14th. century character of the abbey still remains.
Adjoining the church building stand a cloistergarth and refectory creating a real cluster of medieval buildings.

“Nice ruined friary”

Nice to walk around and imagine what it once looked like. Even better is the riverwalk right next to it. Goes for about a mile.
