“Charming but with some reservations”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

The Dunraven Arms Hotel is in the lovely town of Adare in Limerick. It is right on the roadway which has an awful lot of traffic heading south but you never seem to notice the noise. Most of the bedrooms seem to be at the back of the hotel which helps, our room was nice and quiet.

The hotel has an old world look and feel, nice bar, which has a good atmosphere in the evenings, and our room was very spacious. However I was a bit disappointed that for a 4 star hotel that there was no tea and coffee facilities in the room, nor was there any bottled water, nor was there a mini-bar. I would have expected all of these items would be standard fare for 4 stars. There was wi-fi but I couldn't get a signal in my room until I went out into the corridor and stood under the antenna. Nor could I get a signal in the bar or the lobby. I noticed other guests complaining of the lack of signal.

There was a good bathroom but the shower is integrated in the bath, not separate. There is a laptop size safe in the room. But no bathrobes - you can ask for them at reception.

The leisure centre is fine, tucked away down the end of a long corridor.

What brings this hotel up to 4 star rating is its location in quaint Adare town and the food. The breakfast is adequate but dinner is 4 star.

And the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Overall the hotel is good value but a little lacking in the goodies you expect in a more modern 4 star hotel. I would say it is more suited to couples than kids too.

Drop in to the church next door which has a beautiful interior and the garden across the road which is beautifully kept.

Room Tip: Rooms in the number forties are at the back and nice and quiet.

We treated ourselves to a weekend in Dunraven Arms. We often stop off at the hotel for lunch or cuppa while travelling though the village but this was a different story altogether! It was simply a wonderful experience on all levels. Superb rooms on ground floor looking on to lovely garden, very quiet despite a big wedding going on. The legendary breakfast was not an exaggeration .- it set us up for the day. Dinner on Sunday night was superb. This is a hotel that ticks all the boxes.

My mother and I stayed here late July. We settled on this hotel as it marked the midway destination between our relative departure points.

The food was nice; the service was mediocre; room cleanliness was lacking; management was appalling.

We stayed only one night as I was heavily pregnant and our intention was to catch up on some quality time together before the birth of her second grandchild. We found the staff to be rushed and under pressure. The room was spacious, but dried in blood stains on the bed linen was very off putting. Thankfully it was a very warm night and the duvet wasn't missed. Upon reporting this the following morning, the manager apologised in a half-hearted manner with a simple insincere 'sorry' and a shrug of the shoulders. We felt his reaction to be highly unprofessional and derogatory.

My mother had organised a pregnancy spa treatment for me as a surprise! Unfortunately, I had to cancel the following morning as I wasn't feeling well (I was diagnosed with preeclampsia several days later). The manager of the spa refused to refund my mother due to a 24-hour cancellation policy, understandably so, but also refused to issue us with a gift voucher. We parted with her telling us that she would talk to the hotel manager the following Monday (as the manager wasn't on duty at weekends??).

Very disappointed as we had hoped to make this visit a regular occurrence.

We stayed here last week & it was very good . Our room was lovely . Our group meal was divine especially the beef ! Staff were very nice and helpful as they let us watch a Munster match without it overtaking the whole bar . Breakfast was a little disappointing as a leg of ham was on display instead of rashers . Also teas & coffees were cold . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & will be back .Thanks

Wonderful hotel, fantastic spacious airy room. Beautiful food, great service. There are lovely gardens to sit in when the sun is shining. Can't wait to return. A great hotel for a romantic weekend away or as a base for a holiday.

This is a great choice for visiting the South West of Ireland. I stayed on a business trip by myself. The bar food is very good. Also, if you have time visit Micheal Collins bar on the main street in Adare - it has the best Guinness in Ireland (+ sea food chowder). I have stayed in a lot of 4 and 5 star hotels at this stage but the Dunraven stands out as having the very best staff /quality / attitude I have ever seen.

Room Tip: ask for a suite - its not much more expensive

We had a one night stay in The Dunraven Arms in Adare and it was hugely enjoyable and relaxing. The service and staff attitude overall was excellent. It's so simple to be polite, welcoming and attentative. The room was a junior suite and the room had ample space with a lovely view of the gardens. Dinner as gorgeous but it was the varied breakfast spread which will stand out as a highlight. Freshly carved ham as an alternative to rashers / bacon was a novel and tasty touch. Overall the hotel is charming and would highly recommend a stay.

Room Tip: The junior suite is lovely and spacious
