“Two fab meals over two days”
Reviewed May 6, 2014

First we had lunch a deux. Super friendly service and simply delicious food - my organic chicken an chorizo pasta was perfect and the seafood chowder was demolished very quickly by the other half. Good choice of wine by the glass and of course, huge selection of quality beer and stout. Place was packed.
Dinner on Friday night for ten upstairs where we had a more limited choice in order to enable kitchen to cope with size of party. The choice was however excellent and the standard of cooking was top notch. Service was also very good. Only blot on the otherwise excellent night was that all three of our choices of wine, on what was not a huge wine list were not available - this was a little tricky and could have been better managed by telling us in advance. Would definitely return Probably best place to eat in the town by some distance.

“great informal food”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

the kind of place that if you go upstairs, you get a great dining experience, but if, like us, you want a place to grab a quick, oh-so-tasty bite to eat before hitting the cinema, the Oarsman is certainly hard to beat. The food is simple, but beautifully presented, the service is quick and friendly, and you leave feeling satisfied!

“Disappointed but hopeful”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

Was delighted when my sister got a last minute booking last night. staff were very warn and helpful on arrival, our order was taken quite quickly but unfortunately they did not have the wine my husband ordered! Never mind we chose another! Then the disappointment crept in- we waited an hour for the first course- nobody warned us that there was going to be a delay from the kitchen! In the meantime we ordered a glass of beer for my dad- we had to ask 3 times before it arrived! Starters eventually arrived and were very nice indeed - no complaints! We then waited another half hour for the main course( some of our party of five did not have starters which meant they had essentially waited 1.5 hours for any food!). All food was served on large square plates- lovely presentation only problem was the table was not really big enough for all five plates! Veg serving dishes arrived with no serving spoons and veg was not quite hot enough! I had pork- no complaints! Sister and husband had beef- lovely but the fillet was overlooked (burned in part)! We ordered a second bottle of wine but they had run out of the same bottle! All in all I will try this place again because I think they just had a bad night! They seemed unprepared for a busy Easter weekend - hence delays in kitchen and running out of stock???? Staff did do their best and remained polite throughout!  I ordered peppermint tea which did arrive with sugar and milk!!!????When we pointed out that we had to ask 3 times for the beer, the beef was a little burned and we were disappointed that not one but two wine choices were out of stock - there was no offering of anything other than a verbal apology! A token eg a discount or a drink on the house would have been appreciated.
