We stayed here over Patricks weekend. The location is fantastic and the view from our room was perfect. The room itself was plain yet functionary, even though it has been renovated recently enough. There was a great number of options at breakfast time, but that being said the hot food wasn't great. If the breakfast was improved I'd happily return.

This was my first ever visit to Kinsale - and I was far from disappointed.
Kinsale has a very continental feel to it with it's very narrow streets, it's many cafe's, wine bars and restaurants. The hotel is about a 3 minute walk to the town which was perfect for my aunt who can't walk very far.

Actons looks directly out on to the water and we were lucky enough to have a room that looked straight out onto the water.

Staff were very friendly. The room (twin room) was a good size, spotless throughout. Service in the bar was great. We missed breakfast (with the time change!!) so I can't comment on the food.
2 downsides - the first was for our friends who were trying to get a taxi from the hotel - a very long wait and a group of frustrated people. But thats not the hotel's fault. The second was that the elevator wasn't working which wasn't ideal for my aunt as the stairs is a challenge. But I'm sure this will be fixed.
Would certainly recommend Actons for anyone visiting Kinsale.

The town of Kinsale always generates good press. This is largely due to initiatives by local restaurants to market Kinsale as a food destination rather than their 'splended' restaurant located in the town of Kinsale. While this was some decades ago the message had legs and boosted the caché value of the town as a place to visit, if only just to walk around.

The marketing of Kinsale became the lifelong endeavour of one local citizen, who is now deceased, but the legacy lives on and Kinsale is as a consequence a 'cool' place to visit, stay or better still dine.

If this review has a tone of familiarity about it is so because I once did business with Acton's Printing Works in the town. Like all sales representatives I had a lunch allowance which I spent then in the local Acton's Hotel overlooking the pier. It was evident that this Acton family were of high standing in this town. This was over some forty years ago.

The hotel evolved from the Acton family home which was at the centre of formidable terrace of town houses. On acquiring the adjoining house a hotel was created to become Acton's Hotel. Its entrance would have been from Lower O'Connell Street, the street behind the current structure. I attach a photograph of this. The town at that time boasted other enterprises that had the Acton name over the shopfront. This was during the lean post war years.

This long prologue is by way of a scene set to my recent visit. It was the acquisiton of the hotel by Trust House Forté in the '70's that saw a major expansion and the whole terrace Victorian was obsorbed to create a credible if not a hotch potch stand alone hotel. The need for an imposing fascáde meant that what had been the back garden became the front. Recent renovations have given the frontage an even greater aestethic cohesion withough too much compromise to the original victorian architecture.Equally and importantly adding much space that does not intrude in the architecture.

If you have stayed with me this long then you must be interested to hear what I have to say about the hotel though my star rating probably is a giveaway. The hotel has gone through a 16 month renovation so there is a freshness about the place. The reception is bright and staffed with helpful switched on staff. The bar has retained a hotel bar feel , in contrast to the opulent soleless lounges of many new hotels. The restaurant is on the ground floor adjacent to the reception making for an orderly access to services. The conference centre/ function room is added to this while the leisure centre is a stand alone building directly in front. All hinting to the minefield the sundry owners must have had to traverse over the years to the present finished hotel.

My room was modern and well appointed. I enjoyed the quirkyness that one of my window's was in fact part of a door on the adjoining street. I took a photograph of that too. The evening meal was worthy of the standards that we have come to expect from Kinsale. A wedding in the hotel did not intrude but rather gave an energy to the arriving new year. Breakfast was leisurely and up to the standard expected and had to be followed by a walk around the historic town to shake off the cobwebs of ringing in the new year. This is a must to explore the narrow streets and learn of the event that led to the demise of the Irish Clans and their Chieftans. Now I wonder was it worth staying with me ?!!

My wife and I stayed at Actons Hotel for two nights at the end of March. We stayed in a superior double room with a harbour view.

The room was beautiful, well decorated very comfortable and fantastic views out over the harbour. The bed was very comfortable too. The size of the room was excellent, plenty of space. The bathroom was a little small but was very clean and beautifully furnished.

The breakfast was excellent, a great choice of hot food from the menu and the cold buffet was great too. I can recommend the full Irish breakfast and the eggs benndict.

The hotel is located in the town, only a few minutes walk to all the shops, pubs and restaurants.

The hotel bar was lovely, a very relaxing place to end the night.

All staff we encountered were extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would return to it.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a harbour view

We had a great stay here! The hotel is in a beautiful location right on the bay. Checkin was great with very nice staff. We were upgraded to a water front room (#118) which was beautiful, with a comfy bed! The breakfast (€10) was excellent and the service was incredible, even girls who were not our waitress stopped and checked on us. Can't wait to go back to Kinsale and Actons!!

Overall, we enjoyed a two night visit to Actons, well located at the edge of ‘downtown’ Kinsale and within walking distance of most places a traveller will want to visit. There is good private car parking for guests.

Room size varies. Our ‘superior’ room had an attractive view over the harbour. But it was ‘compact’, with only a queen bed and it and the (shower-only) bathroom had quite poor storage. Décor was bland and the general impression was ‘budget’ – OK for a few nights but not for a week and not 'romantic'.

The staff - especially those on the Front Desk - were very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast is an adequate buffet, supplemented by quality hot food cooked to order. The hotel also has a good brasserie and a ‘fine dining’ restaurant (not open during our visit).

There is a pool etc close by (but not connected internally) but we did not use this. WiFi is uncomplicated, free and available throughout the hotel.

We thought our rate of c. $150 per night including breakfast was reasonable value in context.

Tip - the nearby Fishy Fishy modestly calls itself a ‘café’ but is in fact an excellent and very good value restaurant

Great location in Kinsale. Decorated beautifully. All staff I encountered were friendly and helpful. Room and bathroom were spacious, luxurious and really clean. Could hear some noise in corridor and in street outside room when people walked by but could not fault any other aspect of the hotel. Made use of the leisure centre and pool, facilities are brilliant. Pool area and changing rooms are clean and warm. Breakfast was faultless, particularly liked that the hot food was not on buffet and was made to order. Plenty of choice on cold buffet and on hot food menu. Breakfast staff were quick to serve us and take away used dishes despite restaurant being almost full. I was impressed by this! Will definitely stay in Acton's again when in Kinsale and will recommend to everyone!
