“wonderful experience in Kinsale”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2007

Our group of four just returned from Ireland. We stayed for five nights at The Perryville House. Management couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. We have stayed at the Perryville before and will continue to do so. Right in the heart of Kinsale and close to so many wonderful sights.

The only reason we stayed here was that all other suitable accommodation in Kinsale was booked.
We were offered the best room at a discount. Despite an oversized room and bathroom, still, value was not good. This first floor room was noisy from the road and there was no cooked breakfast available. The internet did not work.
The hostess did not tell us her name nor offer us tips on Kinsale.
Security was a shocker. Guests were made to leave their room key in a pot by the door. These keys could easily be collected by other guests as the owners did not regularly clear the keys. Particularly annoying was being made to wait at the front door while owners were in the back office, possibly on a lengthy phone call.

  • Liked — Large room and accommodation
  • Disliked — Poor value (Cold hosts, noisy, no cooked breakfast)

LOCATION: The location is great. It is on the main street but I didnt notice any traffic noise, at least from my room.

ROOM: We had the room on the website (with the poster bed) and as a result probably one of there better rooms. The room was nice and large, and much larger than the only other room I saw in the hotel. This room has a huge very un-private garden exclusive to it. Other rooms windows look out onto it and it's not a place that you want to hang out since there is really no place to sit. The concept is nice, but it's fairly worthless. I would prefer one of the higher rooms with a sea view. The entire hotel and rooms has sisal carpeting which isnt pleasant on the feet. You almost have to wear shoes in your room. There was a leak from the upstairs room that was going into the bathtub and they drilled a hole in the ceiling to release the water.

BREAKFAST: I have stayed at 4 hotels in Ireland now and this was the worst. Not a lot of options; stop serving at 10AM (even on a sunday).

STAFF: Not very pleasant. One person told me twice in 5 mins to lock the door since if it is left open, people WILL burglarize the room. The place doesnt look unsafe but she was rude with her speech. Then then next day I get my car only to find that they didn't lock the doors.

We also stayed at the Carlton which has a beautiful view, much nicer rooms, and was completely refreshing after our Perryville visit so I recommend staying there instead.

We just returned from our trip to Ireland and Kinsale was the last night. We hadn't made reservations, and that was a mistake. All the B&B's listed were already booked. We were left with Perryville and it was a disappointment. It was the most expensive of all the B&B's we stayed. The sheets were rough and the bathroom shower was moldy. The house itself was beautiful and the free use of the internet was a big plus. The breakfast was limited and if you wanted eggs you had to pay more for them. I would recommend making reservations during the busy summer months.

My husband and I had looked forward to our vacation in Ireland with great expectations. Each hotel and B & B we visited throughout the countryside and within county Cork were wonderful and extremely accommodating until we reached the Perryhouse in Kinsale. Although the harbor setting of this community is incredibly picturesque and charming beyond words, our non-commutative hosts left something to be desired. We were well aware of the key deposit policy whenever you leave the house. However, it is necessary to ring a bell outside the locked door to regain entry into the house and access your room no matter what time of the day it is, which is uncomfortable when you are returning at 10pm and find it necessary to ring several times in order to receive a curt response.

Since there is no dinner menu available at this establishment, we ventured into town and found "Man Friday" which provided a wonderful, well-priced meal. In the morning, we had anticipated a hearty breakfast which was included with the ample price of our overnight stay. I do not consider cornflakes, prunes, day old scones, orange juice and a cup of coffee a generous offering. And in fact, should you chose to actually have meat or eggs for breakfast, be prepared to pay an additional $16 for an unappealing, extremely small portion of food that leaves you wondering if the heavy down comforter in mid-August that you struggled with all night justified the price of your room.

Finally, upon leaving this establishment, we were once again charged for our stay even though we had prepaid and presented a voucher upon our arrival. With so many wonderful B & B's in town, you would think that leaving guests with a pleasant experience would be most important since they greatly depend on customer recommendations. Unfortuntely, I would truly not encourage a stay at the Perryhouse and wish that I had made other arrangements instead of staying at this establishment.

Just returned from a golf trip in ireland. we started our trip in Dublin stayed in The Berkley Court and played golf at Portmarnock and The K Club. The hotel was very nice and comfortable tipical city 5 * hotel. Portmarnock is a super golf links, the K Club in very nice well presented but when you come to ireland the links courses are the ones to play.

Next stop Perryville House, Kinsale and The Old Head Golf links. Perryville house was charming I had my best nights sleep in years. the bed was so comfortable(loved the hot water bottles). the old head was spectacular, what views and scenery, a must for any golf trip.

next stop the Killarney Park Killarney Co Kerry, and golf at and ballybunion Tralee and waterville. The Killarney Park was very nice and comfortable the room was well appointed and the service was excellent. all the golf courses were very good, the best was waterville. We ate all 3 nights in the killarney Park, next time we would eat in a restaurant 2 of the nights. the food was good in the hotel, but hotel food is hotel food in Kinsale we ate in two different restaurants Toddies and Crackpots, both were excellent. we stayed our last two nights at Dromoland Castle and played the golf course.
Dromoland was very nice our room was a bit small but nice to spend some time in a real irish castle.

All in all it was a wonderful trip we stayed in large 5* hotels except for Perryville House which we prefered as a family run irish home. i wouldnt play the K Club again but the other courses i would play again and will do soon.

we travelled from the Park hotel across the mountains to bantry and on to kinsale . beware of the roads as well as the irish drivers, they drive in the middle of the road .we stayed at perryville house for 3 nights .a small hotel in the centre of kinsale . they have parking infront. we were happy to park up for a few days .the hotel was charming we were met by andrew the owner and we were given a room in the tower . a lovely large room with a balcony and nice view to the yachts on the marina . the bathroom was large and well appointed with a separate bath and shower.andrew booked us into Toddies restaurant for dinner which was very good. the black sole was great .
the next day we had a magnificent breakfast which even had honey from andrew's garden .after breakfast we did the walking tour around kinsale which is worth doing and we went to fishy fishy cafe for lunch .we played golf at the old head on day two and to our suprise andrew from perryville was there and he joined us for the round . what a golf course , its the most spectacular course i have ever played on ,we had big tom as our caddy , ask for him he was wonderful . and don't play andrew for money he has a funny handicap .
our last night we dined in the Blue Haven which was ok , not as good as toddies and max's. perryville house was excellent ,family run and a fun place to stay .Kinsale is a nice small sea town but when the tide is out the smell is strong . it was great experience and we will be back
