“Unprecedented amount of ocean-side holes”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

Every hole on the Old Head Golf Links is breath-taking and probably has the most ocean-side holes of any golf course in the world. My husband golfed while I walked along taking pictures and viewing the beauty of the course. Every turn had a great view of the historic lighthouse, Atlantic Ocean or stunning cliffs. I recommend reserving a caddy, the give great insight of "what is around the corner and over that hill."

This is a world-class golf course and even has a "great" clubhouse compared to other golf courses in Ireland.

Played Old Head in August of 2012, twice. The first day, we didn't see much of holes 6-10 due to what the caddies called the "sea mist", heavy fog. Fortunately, the sun broke through, and were blessed with blue skies and perfect weather the remainder of the day. A repeat round the following day yielded perfect weather, we were very lucky. The weather down on the southern tip of Ireland is very finnicky. But that should not dissuade you from playing this great course. I've played many of the best courses in the world, like Cypress Point and Pebble Beach and this course is as scenic, if not more so, than either of them. Because the the location is quite remote, there were not crowds of people, and it made for a very relaxing atmosphere. The clubhouse is first rate, great dining inside and out, with a good proshop. The caddies were first rate and battery operated pull carts are also available. The overall atmoshpere was very welcoming and not stuffy at all. The course was in impeccable shape, the fairways were like carpets and the greens smooth and true. The vistas were incredible, with many holes lining the rugged cliffs with the Atlantic 300 feet below. If you get the chance to play this course, don't pass it up. They have 30 rooms at the course which we didn't stay at, so I can't comment on them, but I'm sure they would be excellent. We stayed in Kinsale, about a 20 minute drive to the course. Kinsale was a delightful harbour town with great shopping, pubs, and restaurants to enjoy. The experience is about as good of a golf experience you can get. By far the highlight of our 2 week Ireland golf trip. The Old Course at Ballybunion and Doonbeg Golf Course should not be missed as well.

“Peeble on Steroids”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

This was our first stop to play golf in Ireland. We had 5 days of golf arranged and this was the only course that was not truly a links course but everything about this course was wonderful. The Views are better than either peeble or bandon dunes, The course is in excellent shape and all but 4 holes are truly exceptional. We were a twosome and our caddy was a member. We arranged to have wives rent a buggy (cart) and follow us around for 60 euros. Good deal when you consider it kept them out of shops for 5 hours. The course is very fair although I did put 3 balls in the ocean. We had a 10 day weather wise. All week the winds were light and still the courses were difficult for a 63 year old 18 handicapper. Be sure and play the right set fo tees for your skill level you will enjoy the courses much more if you do so.

If I had to only play one course the rest of my life I would die a happy man if it was Old Head. This was probably the most beautiful course we played in all of Ireland. The price is quite steep, but worth every penny as this is one of those course that is a must for every golfer.
