“A little disappointed”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

My wife and I ate at this restaurant and found the food quality and service to be a little disappointing. We ate at this restaurant 2 years ago and in our opinion the quality and choice has fallen. Also, the whole atmosphere seemed rushed and cramped with people waiting inside the door for tables. Some of the tables were quite close together, including ours, which made for quiet talking.

For starters I had Scallops with an Asian sauce which was quite tasty. My wife skipped starters but requested some breads, we had to ask 3 times for this and she was eventually given 1 single slice of brown bread. This bread was by far the driest bread we've ever been served anywhere.

For mains I had the seafood basket which was supposed to in a filo basket; instead it was more like a seafood selection in a dish, the filo pastry was soggy and was presented in a ceramic dish because the pasrty collapsed. My wife ordered the fish cakes which were only average, nothing too exciting and not much fish inside. We ordered a side of garlic potatoes, these were mostly black and so we didn't eat too many of them.

We were generally disappointed in the selection of fish available, there was nothing special like John Dory, Sea Bass, Monkish; it all seemed to be the usual cod, salmon and prawns...all every day fish which you could easily have yourself at home.

For dessert we shared a banoffi pie which was pleasant enough.

Service was fine apart from asking for the dry bread 3 times.

Would we return? Probably not anytime soon, not until they change the menu to be more seafood related. I would recommend Deasy's in Ring before An Sugan.

“Great food, great atmosphere!”
Reviewed January 9, 2013 via mobile

We ate at An Sugan in early January. From the moment we entered we felt a lovely atmosphere which was aided by the traditional rustic surroundings and a roaring open fire. The bar although rustic had a cozy feel to it!
We ordered fish pie which we could have had seconds as it was so tasty and the lemon curd meringue dessert and banoffie pie were out of this world.
Although not a traditional sense of a pub but more a restaurant you would still be quite comfortable ordering just drinks.
The only place it lacked slightly was in service. Although it was prompt it lacked the Irish hospitality from the waitress. Also the barman was a bit over friendly with the waitress calling her 'honey' and 'love' and his appearance was disheveled with his pants hanging a bit too low and his shirt hanging out of his trousers. These are only small issues and they only detract slightly from the wonderful ambience and food.

Would love to come visit again.

“Adequate”
Reviewed December 31, 2012

On a wintery Sunday between Christmas and New Year, we were grateful the An Sugan was serving meals as there was little else open in town. Staff were friendly but a little 'Faulty Towers' (as previously reviewed - at least there's consistency!) despite 3 bar/wait staff for as many customers. Fish meal was tasty, a good sized portion of fish but sadly over-cooked (no excuse when the place emphasizes its seafood focus). Tasting platter included a delicious chicken pate. All meals and salads drenched in sticky sauces even when sauce was requested on the side. 3/5 rating was influenced by our appreciation that it was open and serving adequate meals.

“A nice little restaurant in Clonakility”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

We were on a driving holiday through Ireland, staying in small towns, looking for small authentic experiences. We enjoyed An Sugan. It was at the end of the main road, almost out of town, and worth the walk. Unpretentious, good food, prompt service, nice bar, good atmosphere.

And nicely followed by a few drinks at de Barras on a Monday night down the road. Together, a great night out in County Cork

“Like an episode from Fawlty Towers..”
Reviewed December 3, 2012 via mobile

After searching Clonakilty from top to bottom on a Sunday night for somewhere nice to eat, few and far between it seems, and as the clock was getting to the stage of the night where it was decision time...we walked in here..nice enough but small things would have made a big difference like turning down the lights, sone nice music etc...to be fair the food was good, not great but good, goats cheese was nice, burger was good and my sirloin was cooked as requested and was fine, 2 glasses of Sav Blanc were nice but it was like eating on the set of Fawlty Towers, service was sloppy, waitress was very efficient, but that abrupt kind of efficiency that's just short of being rude, but the star of the evening was the gentleman behind the bar, slovenly is the kindest way of describing him I can think of, trousers half way down his butt, shirt half in and half out, tie tucked in between buttons on his shirt, and so pleased with himself that he kept up a running commentary throughout and let me say it was not worth listening to.
I am in the hospitality industry and if this guy was working for me he would have been sent straight home if he turned up for work like this in one of my businesses.
