“Flawless, thank you for a great day!”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

I find the best place to start is at the beginning …from the moment we entered the hotel on the day of our first viewing we were pleasantly surprised by what met us. Fernhill House Hotel was a hotel that neither Brian nor I were familiar with but as we wanted a West Cork Wedding we visited many of the hotels in the area. On that first visit we met with Caroline Hayes, the wedding co-ordinater for Fernhill House Hotel, she made us feel that our wedding would be the most important wedding to ever take place in the hotel; she gave us her full attention while we chatted about our big day over tea and biscuits and when we had discussed what the hotel had to offer she even gave us her time to discuss possible churches in the area that would suit the size of our wedding party as well as our taste, Caroline also gave us suggestions for photographers and bands and sent us on our way with loads to consider. Upon viewing the many hotels that were on offer in West Cork it was time to make a decision and Fernhill won the battle on every level. It ticked all the right boxes: a family run hotel, just the right size so our wedding guests would fill it without being spread all over the place, a strong and varied menu which made the most of local produce, individually decorated bedrooms including a luxurious bridal suite and a cosy and well thought out interior coupled with spacious, pretty and relaxing gardens. Once the decision was made and the hotel booked the hard work started and many more decisions had to be made, Caroline was always on hand to answer any questions we had and what felt like the rare occasion that Caroline was off, Teresa was more than willing and happy to help.

As the time ticked closer to the big day we had our menu tasting and this was superb, the food was top class, the wine was beautiful and the staff could not have been any more precise. We chose our menu and on our wedding day the Chef along with the other kitchen staff did a wonderful job behind the scenes delivering the dishes to the highest of standards in the way we wanted. Thanks Chef!

The day before the wedding rolled around and our families and guests descended on the hotel, we were all made feel most welcome and Caroline allowed Brian, myself and our bridal party time in the function room to set up and organise a few personal touches.

December 14th 2012, our Wedding Day was here and as our guests arrived at the hotel after the ceremony they were greeted with mulled wine, which they could not get enough of, a selection of other drinks and a variety of pastries to keep them all going until the meal. The fires were lighting which made the place feel so cosy and welcoming and really complemented the tasteful Christmas decorations which were placed throughout the hotel. There was a lovely buzz of conversation and everybody settled into the day, the meal was a huge success and guests continue to tell us how impressed they were with not only the flavours and presentation but also the quantity.

Caroline, Neil, Teresa and Michael really did outdo themselves, they kept the day flowing and everything went perfectly, they made everybody and I mean everybody feel welcome and for this we are very grateful. Thank you to all the staff at Fernhill House Hotel, you all should be very proud of the team you are part of and the happy memories you have helped to create.

The perfect location for any function, Both my wife and I stayed there over night New Year night, attending a wedding, on arrival in Fernhill House, Hotel Skibbereen, one could see immediately that a lot of thought was put into it location and surroundings, it was perfectly clean in all aspects,
the Staff were very polite and at all stages available to assist in every way, ( for me Frank/Cobh I would like to thank the staff member who assisted me in the old faction way releving me with my
indigestion on the night, it was just what the doctor ordered) The food was excellent, so too was the dancing area, the floor was spot on for dancing, would reccomend it for any occassion

Room Tip: rooms on south side are quieter, but all are equal for any occassion

Myself and partner checked into the hotel with a voucher for 2 night stay B&B with a bottle of wine for dinner.
Receptionist didn't really know anything about the voucher. We got to our room which was really cold when reception rang the room to tell us we could not eat in the hotel the following day because they had a large wedding. I asked if there was a code for the wifi and she said there was no wifi in that room. We went down to get some food at the bar, we thought we were the only people in the hotel. No atmosphere at all. There was no way you would just sit at the bar have a drink. There was no other customers around so we kind of had to wait for service while staff seemed to be busy doing other stuff. After our food we asked was there anyway of connecting to the Internet and then the receptionist offered to move us to a room with wifi. Room was much bigger and nicer than the first.
Weather was miserable next day so we asked if there was any chance of getting food. Told we could just have the wedding menu but only after the wedding party had been served so we just drove into town.
When we got back to the hotel we were in our room when some body knocked on the room and tried to get in. Thought it must be a drunk wedding guest. Then 5 mins later another knock on the door. My partner went to the door to see who it was. It was a woman who was blocking the peep hole with her fingers and asked could we open the door. Didn't say she was accommodation or a staff member. When my partner opened the door he was questioned as to how we got the key to the room! At reception he said. Did you check in today she asked. No. Well how did you get the key then she asked? She said something about other wedding guests. He just told her we checked in yesterday and that we were not part of the wedding party. She apologised for disturbing us and left.
Hotel seems great as a wedding venue but that's all it is. A wedding venue. And that's all they were concerned with for our stay here.
Wouldn't stay here again.

Hello Shiv

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts and we are disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay.

We have taken all you have said on board and can assure you that it does not normally happen and will certainly not if you decide to stay with us again.

If you would like an answer to some of your misgivings here are our thoughts:

The hotel was quiet on the date as it was only two days after Christmas and it is a quite time in Clonakilty.

Wifi is free at the hotel and available in the lobby and selected rooms which we normally reserve for corporate clients or upon request. If requested we would have allocated a room with wifi.

Dinning for guests during weddings is never normally interrupted but the circumstances during this Christmas period did not allow for it. We will endeavour to ensure that it does not happen again.

With regard to the receptionist checking your room, we are deeply sorry if this upset you but it was a once off incident that should not happen and we have the systems in place to ensure that it does not.

While Weddings are our speciality, I am sure if you stayed again your experience would be at the normal high standard enjoyed by guests at our hotel.

Have a great 2013.

The perfect location for a wedding! We held our wedding on the 10th of November in Fernhill and all I can say that it was fantasitic from start to finish. This is all thanks to the stellar work done by Theresa, Mike, Caroline and all the staff of the hotel. The whole reception was perfect from the time we arrived until we left the following day. No request was too big or too small for the hotel.

On the day the venue looked beautiful and the food was devine, People are still commenting on the food ! The service was fabulous with plenting of wait staff . We were able to avail of the newly lit gardens for some photos. The whole day was fantastic and this was all down to the wonderful work of the whole team at Fernhill .

We would definitley recommend Fernhill as a wedding venue.

My wife and I stayed at Fernhill House Hotel on 3rd December 2012. We usually stay at another hotel a few miles away, but this was not available on the night. We decided to stay at Fernhill, which we had known about for many years, but had never stayed in.
What a pleasant surprise we got when we arrived. Our room was very large, well equipped and comfortable. All the staff we met were were genuinely warm and friendly, efficient and most helpful.
We had an excellent Full Irish breakfast the following morning, which was beautifully presented with copious quantities of tea, coffee and toast.as well as a nice selextion of cereals etc.
All in all we had a 5***** experience at 3*** prices, which we plan to repeat before too long!
Even in these recessionary times Fernhill can deliver the wow factor!. Well done.

Room Tip: Room 202 is excellent. If you have any special preference, I believe the helpful staff will help you...

We held our wedding reception here in September and from the moment we arrived to the moment we left the following morning albeit a little worse for wear we could not fault the place. Caroline Hayes and the O'Neill family were so helpful in helping us plan the wedding and went over every little detail with us. On the day itself, with the added bonus of fine weather we had our drinks reception in the marquee which we along with our guests really enjoyed. The gardens at the hotel are spectacular and are kept in very good condition. The buggy they use for driving the guests up and down from the hotel to the marquee provided some great laughs especially for us when we watched the video of our wedding back. People loved it!!
Onto the food which was so important to us that I honestly cannot fault it. Weddings are long days and by the meal time you really are famished so we knew that by choosing Ferhill as our wedding venue, we didn't have to worry about the quality of the food. The amount of compliments we got from people on the day and afterwards about the food is too many to count. Ive been to weddings where by the time you get your food, your neighbour on another table is finished their meal but this does not happen at Fernhill. It's so well organised and with plenty staff on duty that everyone got their food at the same time.
We went for the Fernhill fish and chip shop as our evening food which went down a treat with all our guests. I loved the extra touches like the lobster pots and netting.
After the music and dancing had ended our guests were not pushed out the door. We had plenty time to see people off and chat with them before they left. Then it was onto the residents bar where we tucked into the leftover sandiwches and finished off what was an unforgettable day with a few relaxed drinks.
The rooms at the hotel were also very comfortable and really well decorated athough I have to say we didn't spend too much time in them as it was 6 in the morning by the time we saw ours!!
Thank you Fernhill for all you did for us and our guests on our wedding day, we look forward to visiting again for your yummy Sunday lunch some day soon. Kieran & Brenda.
