“Great Wedding Venue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2007

Attended a wedding of a family member here in december.

The venue is fantastic and very tastefully decorated.

Bear in mind when you go to this venue that it is a collection of restored cottages/houses/ stables and is set on a hillside so a certain amount of walking up and down gravel paths and hills is inevitable. But dont let this put you off.

The rooms are well laid out and comfortable and have every thing you need for a one night stay. Yes there are small things that could have been done better and finished to a higher quality but all in all if you are just here for one evening attending a wedding or the like they will not bother you.

The food served at the reception was the nicest, best presented wedding meal I have ever seen. The staff were attentive and dealt with any queries efficiently. The venue is also child friendly and the staff had no issues dealing with even small children at the reception.

Overall this is a great venue for a wedding even in cold wet December and I imagine in the summer it is even nicer.

We attented a wedding in August in Barnabrow it was a magical day. The setting, staff and food were fantastic. I have to say I have not enjoyed a wedding as much in a long time, the company had a lot to do with it, but Barnabrow was a unique and magical place to attend a wedding. Friends and family take a look because I would love the opportunity to attend another wedding there.

My husband and myself stayed here for a wedding reception lately. I must say the food was simply out of this world. I never had better food at a wedding and I am vegetarian. The venue was beautiful also. We stayed in the main house and the room was lovely, really unique and old world.
However I must say that one staff member was not particularly nice the morning after the wedding when asked a question by myself. To say that I was taken aback by this person's curt retort would be an understatement.
Other than that this minor incident I would say that Barnabrow was a very special venue and the wedding we attended there went off exceptionally well.

  • Liked — It is a very different place
  • Disliked — Some staff could do better when taking care of the customers.

Attended a wedding reception there recently...

It was OK, but ...

Hotel handbook rule 1: Always keep the rooms warm. There is nothing worse than entering a cold room. The rooms were quite dark and the stone/tile floors didn't help ...

Buffet dinner: the food was nice, but they ran out!

Bar Staff: Unfortunately one of the staff was downright rude. And there were doing the ususal cynical trick of collecting drinks that had not been finished whilst you were away from your drink dancing etc..

Breakfast; No vegetarian cooked breakfast on offer and what has to be the smallest glass of Orange juice you will ever see ...

  • Liked — nothing particularly
  • Disliked — staff, cold rooms

My husband and I stayed here with our 15 month-old son, and found Barnabrow House to be quite lacking in hospitality. Their website touted what a child-friendly place it is, with babysitting, etc, as well as an on-site restaurant. We did not find it to be child-friendly, or friendly in any other respect. When we sought out the proprietor to ask a couple of questions, she was quite rude and unwelcoming, acting as if even talking to us was an imposition. She informed us that babysitting was not available and could not be arranged. So much for our hoped-for dinner out alone. We then inquired about making a reservation in their own restaurant and were informed that it was only open Wednesday through Saturday. We had checked in on a Monday night and planned to stay until Wednesday morning. She was not at all apologetic about the situation and made no attempt to accomodate us in any way. Their website, of course, has no mention of the limited operation of the restaurant. No mention either when we made our reservation. Moreover, at breakfast with our son, we were made to feel on high alert for any spills, dribblings or general toddling about. We checked out after only one night.

Stayed in the 'main house' as guests at a wedding. The wedding banquet and venue were beautiful - very atmospheric and the food was of a really good standard. The service was very good and our room was spacious and nicely decorated in a traditional manner to suit a country home. Breakfasts were very traditional and hearty after a late night, taken in a delightful room. The many children in the wedding party had the run of the house and the grounds and it was perfect for a large family event. The rooms are expensive and the only downside was 2 adults and 2 (small) children sharing a (ridicously high) double bed and a single bed.

Not sure that it would be a great choice for longer than a couple of nights and also if your crowd did not completely 'take over' the run of the place it might feel a little empty and isolated.

We thought it was a really special venue for a wedding party consisting of the irish, french canadians, scottish, and germans! Truly memorable.

  • Liked — General ambience, food
  • Disliked — Very high beds

Beautiful location, great views but sadly let down by poor facilities not reflected in price of rooms.
Be warned the rooms (tastefully decorated for the most part) lack the kind of facilities one would expect. We were there as part of a large wedding party of the kind that the owners congratulate themselves on hosting so well and yet seemed not able to cope with the demands of facillitating a full compliment of guests. While there they were met with a large number of complaints including no flushing toilet, faulty electrics, no hot water and no heating. That combined with lack of facility to make hot drinks, no baths and a very poor customer service I'm afraid made this a very disappointing stay.
