Visiting this Castle from the XII century made me feel I saw Ireland. The place is veru well maintained, the original furniture, paintings and gardens are superb. The tour guide was spectacular and the story of ghost spirit in the library was the highlight. A must!

“Malahide Castle has had a makeover!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

In the last year a lot has changed at Malahide Castle. The model railway is no longer on view and Tara's Palace (doll house collection) has been moved out to Powerscourt in Wicklow. There is now a large Avoca shop and restaurant here, catering perhaps more to locals than tourists. The botanic gardens are accessible and are pleasant to view, although the National Botanic Gardens are free and are much more worth seeing. The restaurant is very large and as usual, Avoca portions are generous, but it is not cheap and they have the unfortunate habit of microwaving food there to warm it. (Companion and I had an open-faced sandwich and a pastry both ruined by microwaving!) Removing the drab and tired cafe and gift shop from the interior of the castle has made room for some information panels and a lift, so the overall impression is much improved. The tour itself is short and not very entertaining, but the building itself is interesting and worth seeing.

“Nice way to spend a few hours near Dublin”

Nice example of what living on an estate would have been like in previous centuries. The grounds are beautiful and the tour of the castle takes about 45 minutes.
