Excellent hotel situated in a beautiful seaside town a few miles outside Dublin. Excellent restaurant. Pool etc. Very close to Renowned Portmarnock Golf Course. Served by bus and train from Dublin. The hotel is old and probably could do with a makeover but it is still a Grand Old Hotel.

We stayed for my husband's 40th birthday. Our check in was over an hour late. This was very inconvenient as we were on a schedule to meet friends. Small things like having to ask for things (tea coffee) more than once. It put a bit of a damper on things as I had booked this great hotel as a birthday treat for my husband.

I wanted to stay somewhat near the Dublin airport and just outside of the city. I was extremely fortunate to find this hotel. A short (and inexpensive - approx. $4.00) bus ride dropped me less than a five minute walk from the Grand. A 10 minute walk takes you to the train station for a short (and yes, also inexpensive) ride into town. Tara and Pearse stations are just south of the river and close to tours, shops, restaurants, etc. Another great location surprise - just across the street is a protected estuary that leads to the sea. Beautiful, walkable beach and wildlife viewing.
Also within walking distance to Malahide Castle (Avoca shop/food on site). Malahide village has many shops and restaurants but I only visited a coffee shop (wish UK would offer cream for coffee!!!, but can' get enough of those Irish scones).

Other reviewers have commented on the age of this hotel. It was built in 1835 but my room was large (for UK) , clean, and in working order. For $90.00 US, I found it an exceptional deal. The dining room seemed a bit expensive so I ate in their Matt Ryan bar, which was comfy, reasonably priced, with good bar fare.

Always felt safe as a solo female traveler.

Taxi back to airport was 17.00 euro during morning rush.

The exterior of this hotel and common areas are very well maintained and clean but once you get to the rooms they are not at all what you expect. The room photos online do not in any way depict the rooms themselves, the room we were given (315) was tiny with ripped wallpaper and a real letdown. Check in was also a nightmare as they had lost my reservation and would not even check until I found the reservation on my BB with no apology.
Would expect much more of this hotel......do not go by what you see on the net....

Room Tip: check your rooms before booking

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at the Grand Hotel.
We appreciate your feedback and sorry the hotel did not fulfil your expectations at this time. The quality and design of our accommodation varies throughout the hotel in keeping with the design of the extended wing and keeping period features of the original hotel. We continually upgrade and refurbish all areas of the hotel to ensure our guests enjoy maximum comfort throughout their stay. We do hope these issues have not tainted your overall impression of the hotel and we can welcome you back in the future.

Kind Regards

We stayed here our third night in Ireland ,after staying at the Clontarf Castle Hotel. The lobby and grounds were very nice but once we entered upon our tiny, cramped ,dark, drab room I was very depressed . It was very stuffy in that room and just plain depressing . It was only for one night as we were staying with family after that. If we were to stay longer we would have no choice but upgrade to a hopefully much nicer room? Lovely town and lovely people but this hotel is needs some TLC.

Room Tip: Make sure you are in the newer part of the hotel.

Dear Guest

Many thanks for taking the time and effort to share you most recent stay with us.

We were sorry to read that you were disappointed with your most recent visit to the hotel. The Grand Hotel was built in the early 19th Century and has some wonderful décor and features of this time. We partner this with luxurious modern décor and facilities which feature across the hotel therefore some of the rooms in the original part of the hotel do have a different lay out to the more modern rooms.

We do hope that you will return to the Grand Hotel and we look forward to welcoming you back to Malahide in the future.

Warm Regards,
Grand Hotel Malahide

We have stayed here several times and love the Grand very much but we fear it's deteriorating. It's in a terrific location and the staff are super friendly. The gym and swimming pool are brilliant but it would be lovely if the hotel had a beauty salon. Rooms are clean and adequate but really need to be updated. We have noticed that the decor throughout the hotel has become very sad particularly the Matt Ryan bar - needs to be painted in lighter colours and the dated stencilling removed along with the artificial ivy. Staff uniforms definitely need to be replaced. Breakfast is very good but would benefit from some usual additions such as smoked salmon, bananas and fresh orange juice instead of "made from concentrate". Afternoon tea would be better if it had clotted cream not whipped. The Grand could really increase their star rating if they just carried out some much needed renovations.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Estuary.

Good

Great view from room
Great location for the town
Good breakfast

Not so good

Indifferent check in
Heat wave management
Housekeeping

Unfortunately with arriving late in a heatwave the room was sealed waiting for our arrival. The window on the 3rd floor didn’t open much. Impossible to sleep. Without doubt the most uncomfortable night ever in a a hotel. Had to get up 3 times to freshen up with cold water

Had to remind them that the room hadn’t been serviced at 4, was told occupied rooms not serviced until then, was don almost straight away
Checked out prior to our evening departure, asked can we use facilities, not pool, but others (that cost) Hadn’t used the pool during our stay

Joey at breakfast a delight unlike the older greeter on day 2 a sullen and miserable man who questioned our room number as if we had spoken in some other language.
Clearly a leadership issue at this hotel with too many with a couldn’t be that bothered attitude. Called after 2 weeks leaving as I believed I left some papers /books there. Too k 24 hours to call back.

Unlikely to return
