“Ireland by the Sea”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2009

The Portmarnock Hotel is a comfortable, elegant resort by the sea-- a short distance by taxi or bus from Dublin City. We stayed at the hotel a few years ago and couldn't wait to return for a couple days of R&R, Irish style. The hotel is spacious yet intimate with all the ingredients for a relaxing stay. The desk clerks were friendly and helpful and there was free internet service/computers in the lobby for checking email. Our room in the new wing was decorated in a funky, European contemporary style. It was also air conditioned which we appreciated when the weather got muggy. My husband loved the challenging golf course right on the hotel premises-- and found it to be very different (links course) than the golf back home in the US. He definitely wants to return. The Portmanock Hotel is beautifully situated between the small sea town of Malahide to the north where there are great restaurants, shops, parks, etc. and Dublin City to the south. We were able to walk to Malahide one evening, taking a scenic walkway along the water. The food at the Portmarnock is delicious. I ordered a smoked salmon plate with fresh Irish soda bread that was absolutely incredible. Portions were large (good for sharing) which helped offset the expensive dining costs currently found in Ireland. For scenic beauty, relaxation, and great golf in a lovely Irish setting, the Portmarnock Hotel is an excellent choice. I would definitely stay here again.

This is rated a 4 star but dont accept an 'old room', insist on the new and report everything that does not work. The rooms are good but very limited TV selection, no movies in room, odd things dont work. no iron in room and all friends had room key issues. Food choices are a bit limited and expensive, Staff were professional and no issues - they helped overcome the Hotel shortcomings,

We just returned today from a two night stay ,we got a room overlooking sea lovely, however seal was broken on window so it was filled with condensaion ,so spoiled view, with was nice size, with tea/coffee facilities, however only two tea bags?,and second day milk was not replenished, remote control for tv didnt work.we bought batteries ,but still didnt work,we notified reception .but was not sorted util following day, when i went back to reception, bar, lounge, restaurant were all lovely, dinner food in osbourne was lovely and service was great. great choice on offer for breakfast, but sausages and pudding were not great for an irish 4 star restaurant, tasteless.
it was lovely to be so close to beach and go for a walk, and complimentary wireless internet throughout hotel.
When we checked out, there was an extra 116euro on bill, took a while to get it sorted, but the main downfall of portmarnock golf links was the room was UNBEARABLY HOT,there was no control over it,a SMALL WINDOW,which we never closed for the two days we were there,on checkout day,we were going to relax in room for a while, but couldnt stick the heat.
My OH asked me in car ,would ou go back,we had a lovely weekend, but my answer was NO,not unless the room heat was sorted.

Caught a wedding party in full swing on first night of our stay. Music playing long into the night and guests returning to their rooms at 3.30am meant very little sleep. We stayed in the new deluxe wing where the bed rooms are very nice but the heavy doors crash shut and are an unwelcome sound whether early in the morning or late at night.
Restricted number of TV channels in room and no pay per view movies are another in room disappointment.
Breakfast was merely adequate with limited choice and under cooked bacon a daily offering. A couple of young children ran riot in the buffet area handling bread etc and were not curtailed by staff. Better to risk offending their parents than the other guests.
The Portmarnock demands a premium rate over other hotels in the area and i have to say it is just not worth it any more.

This hotel is in a nice location in Portmarnock. Close to both its public links and the private club. Also close to Malhide which is a nice town. The hotel is clean and easy to find. The parking is good. The food is decent. The bathroom is nice, good tub. Beautiful grounds and golf course on site. Practice putting for fun. Would stay again.

This property - near Dublin airport and about 40 minutes from downtown by public bus - offers an attractive location with good rooms. The staff were helpful and cheerful. However some rooms (e.g. the main Bar) were closed evenings for private functions so the full range of the staff services were not available. Nonetheless Portmarnock is a good value choice, and we will go again just avoiding weekends when weddings and parties take over.

The hotel was extremely well run and convenient for golf at The Island Golf Club and other courses in the Portmarnock area. Malahide was a nice little town nearby and the train to Dublin takes about 25 or 30 minutes from the hotel, including the five minute drive to the train park and ride. The drive to the airport was easy.

A major plus for me was the availability of internet access on good quality computers with printer access in the lobby at no cost.
