“Abbey saved from fate”
Review of Boyle Abbey

Boyle Abbey has been saved from crumbling by very clever conservation measures. The ruin is a huge structure on the banks of the River Boyle. Its importance in its day is obvious. Its importance today has been underscored by the glass walkway and the careful conservation work undertaken by the Board of Works. It is open to the public and a nice experience to stroll around and wonder about all the history that attaches itself to this building.

. In town we visited the Boyle Abbey, a Cistercian abbey from the 11th century that is being restored stone by stone, the King House museum and the nearby boating village of Carrick on Shannon.

There is an amazing amount of the abbey left. It is well presented. You are given guides to help you find the interesting features.
Well worth the time.
The only caveat is one shared with other abbeys and castles. No parking!

Very interesting - the man who greets people is very knowledgable. Fabulous to see the renovations to preserve such a historical building!!
worth a visit & doesn't cost much to enter.

Mum, my bro and myself went here on a family trip together when we were kids. The detail of the abbey was marvelous that it brings a good vibe of history with you. We didn't know all of the stuff in it which was a shame that there wasnt any tour guides about. Mum immedietly asked 2 French ladies when the tour guide is available in which they apologise that they didn't have a word of english. I hope when I come back again that there would be a tour guide available the next time.
