Great Northern Hotel
Ranked #4 of 5 Hotels in Bundoran
Reviewed May 26, 2013

We stayed here for 2 nights recently to attend a family occasion nearby. Its in a gorgeous location overlooking Bundoran bay and on a lovely cliff walk.golfers would be in paradise.
our room was nice-spacious and overlooking the bay.The rest of the hotel was pretty outdated and I certainly wouldnt give it 4*.
We had a voucher and got the break for 110euro (b and b x2 for 2 nights) It wasnt really worth much more. The breakfast was average-nothing a bit different-just the usual fry-up and eggs.No yogurt available.
I must compliment the barman though as when we arrived in after our event at about 12.30,he happily opened the bar for us and didnt make us feel like it was a favour.
Desk staff nice but generally a feeling that more could have been made of the hotel.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the sea

Thank you for your recent visit with us, and taking the time to give us your feedback. The Great Northern is an old hotel, over 110 years old, and is decorated in keeping with this era.
We are ideally located on the Atlantic Coast nestled on a cliff top surrounded by an 18 hole golf course, it is like you said breath taking. We are extremely lucky with our staff, and we
are proud of them and count them and our location as our greatest assets. Our breakfast consists of a large selection of cereal, juices ,a variety of fruits, plus cooked breakfast. For the price paid we feel our breakfast offers good value for money. Any special requests that are brought to our attention during guests stay we will try to accomadate including low fat diets, vegan diets and glutton free meals. On a return visit please advise our food & beverage manager of any dietary requests, we would love to welcome you back for a return visit

This hotel was very good from the point of view of the food, the lounge area, the spa part and the bar but the room we had was sooooo dissapointing and really let the review potential down. I would have awarded the hotel 4 if the room had been better. Also I do suspect they have some much better rooms but as we were there on a 'deal' basis perhaps thats why we got such a grotty room. Although the room was grotty it was clean and the maids had done their best to leave it clean. However its the dated dark and scuffed furniture, the dismal and dirty net curtains (that are supposed to be white), the old paintwork, the worn and boring bed covers and hard mattresses, that made this room such a disappointment - just made us feel 'what have we come to'. The breakfast on both mornings could not have been better - it was relaxed in a beautiful setting and with a superb choice of food. It was also a nice touch that the owner came round and spoke to everyone at breakfast. The evening meal was also excellent. We loved the lounge where we sat and read as the weather was so bad we could not go out. Also had lunch in the bar and this was very good and a lovely setting. we used the spa and although small it was good. I found the staff ( throughout the hotel and in particular the dining room) to be very nice - no complaints whatsoever. Yes, a good refurbishment in the bedrooms would make this a very comfortable and relaxing hotel to visit. You really don't want to go away from home to somewhere you are looking forward to going to, to say in a bedroom thats dismal, dated and nowhere near the standard of your bedroom at home!. I don't imagine it would take very much to fix up the negatives I have mentioned - please do this, it would make the hotel such a pleasure to visit. PS the location is fantastic - and we did manage a two hour walk on the beach on the second day - this made our visit all worthwhile.

Room Tip: Ask to see the rooms beforehand.

Thank you for taking the time to review the hotel, your overall stay with us seems to have been a positive one. We have a fantastic location with breath taking views. We are really blessed with our staff all of them work hard and are a great asset to the hotel. We have recently invested heavily in the hotel, our dining room, bar, coffee shop, reception area and lobby and also the leisure centre have been refurbished. We have also started on our bed rooms with more redecoration planned for the later part of the year. In the current economic climate we are trying to offer the best value for money as possible, and run some fantastic deals to encourage and open up new markets. We would love you to return in the future, please feel free to contact any of our reservations team who will help and assist you in a return visit, given enough time a superior or sea view room may be available

This hotel is in a beautiful location on the hill overlooking Bundoran. Myself and my partner spent £110 to stay here over the May bank holiday for one night and to enjoy the scenery and a relaxing night in Donegal. On reflection of our experience I feel that we did not receive value for money during our stay, which is quite dissapointing as we always wanted to stay in the Great Northern Hotel.

The Bed was very firm and very uncomfortable and we both woke up the next day with a back/neck ache. There was a very strong smell of gloss paint in the room which was not very welcoming especially when you have a sensitive eye condition. There was also empty medicine packaging on top of the wardrobe when we entered the room. The hotel also looks as though it could generally do with a good refurbishment inside and also more modern fixtures and fittings as they are quite dated.

On a positive note, personally I think the greatest asset to this hotel is the location and the staff who made us very welcome and made our stay very enjoyable. They deserve recognition for their great attitude and service.

When I saw the offer of 59euro for an overnight for 2 people with bottle of wine I thought this is too good to be true. Hubby and I arrived and I thought we would be given a cupboard to stay in because of the price. No our room was a large double overlooking the golf course.
We had a swim, enjoyed the sauna and jacuzzi then a wee drink in the bar, then had a brilliant dinner washed down by the free bottle of wine. Then into the lounge and danced the night away.
We had a great time.
All staff here from the personal welcome at reception from the new slimline Sarah and Deirdre to the dining room staff who were very busy and served the meals with a cheery manner even though they were run off their feet last weekend to the leisure centre staff are all exceptional in their welcome. Thanks to all of you. See you again soon.

It is always lovely to welcome back return guests, especially when the get the charm and the character of The Great Northern. We realise how very lucky we are to be guardians of such an old beautifull building, and we try as best we can to develop and improve it without it losing its style and originality. Thank you for your kind words in reference to our staff, we are blessed to have such a hard work and polite group of employees. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future

where do I start.
Myself my husband and my stepson stayed in The Great Northern hotel for the weekend of May 17th - 19th. The food is awful, the facilities are just as bad, the staff are not very helpful or pleasant. There is no banklink in the hotel there is no facilities for children except a swimming pool that wasn't the greatest. the beds are very uncomfortable, very noisy from 6am onwards.
I don't normally give bad reviews but im just letting you people know that I certainly would not book this hotel again. I booked this through the hotel's website and thought it looked fabulous I was very disappointed and we wont be back.

By far the best thing in this hotel. With one exception- the receptionist who rhymed off some spiel at high speed to us, but without feeling the need to look at us as she did so, her head down to her desk where she was busy doing something more important than bothering to look at us. She managed nevertheless to be able to communicate incessantly with her colleague on reception as he did so. She seemed to be interested mostly in the time things closed: "pool closes at 8"- whereas it actually closed at 9, we learned later..."breakfast finishes at.." ,"grill room.."
Maybe she s just waiting to move on to other and greater things, having seen too many guests now, over the years she has been a hotel receptionist.
When we did have a problem, her policy was to wait and see if we would just put up with it- which eventually we did, in resignation. Our room, advertised with a bath, had only a shower. It would have been nice to soak in a hot bath after the cold of the riverbank, but, tired, and not wanting the further disturbance of shifting rooms, we put up with it. Which suited our receptionist fine. I got the impression she knew we would just put up with it.
The shower room itself was not well finished, with a missing panel under the wash-hand basin, and was in need of refurbishment, with ill-done grouting, ceiling plaster falling, and cracked toilet seat.
The other staff members were really pleasant and helpful.
The service at breakfast was excellent.
Must the hotel still pin signs on bedroom doors saying "non-smoker", when it has been the law for years now?

I have just returned from the most relaxing break in the Great Northern hotel in Bundoran and all I can say is that no other hotel I ever visited have staff in the same League. The staff here are exceptional. From the moment you walk in the front door where not only a warm welcome awaits you but a genuine interest in making your stay a great one await you. Whether it is Jackie or Sara or new girl Deirdre on reception the warmth of the welcome is so unique and wonderful that I have yet to experience any thing quite like it before. No request is a bother whatever you ask they will genuinely try their hardest to accommodate. What more can you ask. We had a lovely large room with spectacular sea views and Kathleen and Mary continue to run a great restaurant. Breakfast was excellent each morning and we had a lovely meal in the restaurant on one of the nights. This is not a cosmopolitan boutique high tech hotel. This is a wonderful well run grandiose hotel. A pleasure to stay here and a good nights sleep. We will see you all in the summer.

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view.
