“Fun out!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2012

Got this for my partner for his birthday, we had so much fun! The surfing was really entertaining, by the end of the session it was just me, my partner and the instructor, so lots of one-on-one teaching!
The accommodation, breakfast, etc is pretty fancy from a hostel point of view (its no 5 star, but very comfortable! The staff are very friendly, they seem to really enjoy what they do! The location is also great, its about 1 minute from the town and almost next door to a lovely restaurant.........cant rem name but its just over the bridge.

My sister bought me a voucher for a kayaking session here. I booked a 2 night stay in the Holyrood Hotel about 2 mins walk away. When I arrived the sea looked really rough and sure enough it was too rough for the sea kayaking. However the lads quickly offered me to give surfing a go which I was happy to do. Had the most memorable day, somehow the sun managed to peak through the clouds for most of the lesson. The water wasn't half as cold as it looked and with the help of the lads, I managed to stand up a good few times. I was kinda upset when they said the session was finished, I easily could have stayed for another few hours in the water. On the way back from the beach, the bus picked up a puncture...it was like a scene from Father Ted, as we bounced down the road cold and wet in the back of the bus in our wetsuits.
My parents have a holiday home in Carrick on shannon which isn't that far away so I will definitely be paying Turf n Surf another visit in the future!

As far as hostels go that I've stayed in this would probably be the second best. The bathroom was spotless and the room was great, 2 bunk beds and a double with private bathroom and great views of the sea. We booked as 3 adults so €120 for 3 of us for 2 nights with breakfast, although we only managed to make it down one morning before 10.30 am and we were offered orange juice, cereal, toast and tea/coffee so that was grand. We went to Mullaghmore one of the days for lunch and would recommend it as the beach is lovely and its only 10 min away by car, anyone will give you directions.
We didn't actually go for surfing, we simply booked it for the price! Although we will be coming back in a gang for surfing in the summer, it was empty as we went in April before a bank holiday.
All in all, was great, kitchen and lounge area are kept well, plus free net, the kitchen and lounge is closed from 10.30pm which is disappointing as be nice to come back after the pubs close (last orders 12.30 pm weekend) for a glass of wine but then again im sure this is the reason it closes. Nightclubs are open but we didn't go to any.

Room Tip: try and get the top room for the view

We stayed here for one night in october. There was a really nice atmosphere in the place. Made very welcome by our host. Full kitchen facilities available as was access to the lounge area which had a collection of dvds and games consoles we could use. Nice and clean lodgings with a basic but nice breakfast in the morning.

Great variety of activities arranged by this place as well by staff who clearly enjoy their job.

The staff here are very helpful, easy to find just passe the bottom of the main street. They also do great rates on boards and wetsuits. we rented a board and a wetsuit, €20 for the two and the boards were already kept down at tullan strand were we just picked it up when we got down to the beach, which was pretty handy!

Myself and my boyfriend decided to check out the surf & hostel standers in ireland, and we were very impressed. After being upgraded to a private room (thanks Cillian!) inc private bathroom we were delighted. Had a great time with the staff, and enjoyed a beer(belgium of course) or two with Pierre. Would highly recommend it to all, and i will defo be back.
ps the surfing was amazing too!
