The Merry Monk is a very popular place for carvery lunch around Ballina, on week days and also on Sundays.
The food is always freshly cooked and generous. The vegetables are organic, and delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful, and prices are not bad.

Popped in for dinner on Saturday with family. Felt very welcome, and had six well prepared meals. I liked the 'chips, mash, chips and mash, or veg.' options, no need for anything more, when it's this well done. Nothing was too much trouble for our waitress, and we stayed to listen to the band and play pool. Ended up a fairly late night too.

When you walk in to the bar , and see the staff you immediately know you are in a well managed establishment. Smartly dressed and tentative. It is very easy to catch their eye , and your glass is never empty . Great food and great craic . Clean loos , and the music is top class . There is even a friendly squeeze-box player . All in all a great restaurant and bar. Well worth a visit.

I visited the merry monk in early November with my husband and two small children. On arrival we were quickly greeted by a member of staff and then took our seats. We were presented with menus by a friendly waitress and offered drinks while we decided what to order. Our children were rather fussy after our long journey and very hungry so we delighted that the waitress offered to bring the children's food first while we waited for our meals. The atmosphere was lovely and although there was a few other tables and only 2 members of staff from our view we felt so looked after! I felt that the waitresses went out of their way to engage with our children asking about Halloween, school etc. Our meals arrived and although we had wanted the crab claws which weren't available that evening we were not disappointed. We were delighted with the homegrown potatoes and vegetables which the staff spoke very highly of. My husbands steak was cooked perfectly while my chowder was delicious. Once our dishes were cleared we chatted about the local area with one of the waitresses whilst the other waitress got the children colouring sheets. Unlike some other places children and customers as a whole are very welcome in the merry monk. Will be returning in the New year so really hoping this wasn't just a once off as it was a great experience from beginning to end.

Our works xmas party was held here. The room we were in was lovely, tables set really nicely. Orders taken swiftly enough , any delay there was due to some of our party being a little tardy. The wait for the starter was exceptionally long and unnecessary as it was just basic fare simply presented. The main courses were a disaster in so far as the service was so disjointed that the person opposite me had her food way before anybody else and by the time the potatoes finally came her food was virtually finished. No concept at all of a floor plan or table plan whatsoever, the staff had no clear idea of where they were meant to be at any point. When dessert arrived there were still sideplates and rolls on the table, they were still there when we vacated the tables. None of the food was particularly hot either. I must add that the staff were extremely friendly and courteous at all times, no problem in that area at all, they just lacked any training/direction. Management were present so they must surely be responsible for this . Maybe the chef insisted on getting one type of main course out before starting on to the next, but that is wrong. I must also mention that whilst the meat/fish was well presented on the plate when the veg and potatoes were served they literally 'splatted' them on top of the meat etc. Please give some training to your staff because the fact that everything was so disjointed really was rather disappointing and not a little annoying.
