I'm only writing this review to balance some of the 1* reviews that criticised the service in the Hotel. The trendy rooms, wonderful riverside location/views and quality of finish of the hotel have been well documented in other reviews. It simply stuns me that people found the service cold or ineffective. It's a long time since I've experienced such good service across the board from management to waiters etc. They were efficient, helpful and most of all very friendly from start to finish, the highlight of which was a very impressive performance by one of the waiters in getting a large (and tricky) drinks order right first time without even writing it down. Maybe that west-of-ireland humour was wasted on some of the guests....who knows.

I'd thoroughly recommend the hotel if visiting in the area - the only fault I could find (when pushed by the staff to find one!) was a lack of a gym but the road by the river is perfect for running so not really an issue.

Dear Helen987,

Fristly a big thank you from the entire team at the Ice House for your lovely trip advisor review.

Unfortunatley we do at times let our selves down by not providing a consistent level of service and indeed the majority of the negative reivews can be accurate.

Looking forward to welcoming you back to the West of Ireland in the future.

My husband booked this 2 night break for our 1st wedding anniversary and boy did he get it right. From the moment we arrived the attention to detail was exeptional. We were personally welcomed at reception despite not having identified ourselves. The manager Dara brought us to our room which was on the new section of the hotel overlooking the river Moy. The surround sound of random music in the room and bathroom was something I have never seen before in hotels and a great idea. We were provided with a complementary glass of bubbly again a lovely touch.

The room itself was very spacious with comfy bed and all the extra's that you would like to have in the room, even a GHD!!! The bathroom was stocked with l'Octainne products and candles on the bath, perfect when having a bath and listening to the music streaming in from surround sound.

We had breakfast on both mornings and both of us could not fault anything, from quality of the food to service. All food was cooked to order which is a nice change from the usual buffet that the majority of other hotels have nowadays.

We both used the Spa facilities, however, found the treatment (back massage) not the best. I was expecting more thermal rooms from the previous reports.

We opted to eat in the hotel on the 2nd night as part of our weeked deal and we were able to choose from the a la carte menu which we did not expect. The meal was one of the best we have ever had. Highly recommend the seafood chowder and the scallops.

Overall the weekend was so relaxing and chilled. The staff were extremely friendly at all times and could'nt do enough for us. Its great to see a hotel offering such value for money deals together with fantastic service and attention to detail. Complimentary newspapers each day, water in the room, things we are expected to pay for these days. Keep up the good work. We'll definately be back again.

I went down to the Ice House for a relaxing two days away and that is exactly what we had. The staff was extremely friendly and anything that we wanted was no hassle at all.

The food was amazing as well, we had dinner and drinks in the restaurant, i would extremely recommend the food to anyone. I loved the menu.

Our room was beautiful and the views were amazing. I really enjoyed the spa treatment i received, and i also really like that you could stay a chill out in the relaxation room available after your treatment and also use the other services should as the steam room, and the hot tubs (i would defo check this out). We made a day of it with the spa facilities.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone, from the mintue we arrived to the time we left i could not fault anything about this hotel.

My Husband and I are just back from a very realxing and very enjoyable 2 night stay in the Ice House Hotel in Ballina. We were both very safisfied with every element of our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful and full of smiles.

The room was just perfect. We stayed in the Rose Room. The views on to the River Moy were just amazing even though we spent some time looking out at the rain!! Our room was very well equipped with a great sound system and an Apple TV with a wide range of music - I have never seen this in any hotel before and was very impressed. The bed was lovely and comfortable and the bathroom was nice and spacious. I was very impressed to see that a ghd was provided for the ladies.... good thinking to who ever came up with that idea!!

Our meal and 2 breakfasts in the restaurant were top class. The service again was very warm and friendly. My husband and I enjoyed a lovely meal.

The design and the lay out of the hotel is very impressive. I love the mix of the old and the new. We enjoyed our treatments in the beutiful spa and relaxed the morning away in the outdoor hot tub.

I would give this hotel 10/10 and we are looking forward to going back in the future. I would definatly recommend this hotel to you readers and hope that you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

We stayed here for 2 nights in July 09 as part of a trip round Northern and Southern Ireland having seen this hotel in Ireland’s Blue Book. We stayed on a B&B basis with dinner included on one night. We really enjoyed our stay from the glass of champagne on arrival to help with our luggage on departure. We had requested a contemporary room rather than a heritage room as we prefer this style. The room was lovely and all the fitments from the lovely bathroom to the Pioneer surround system were of a very high standard including all the little touches such as the candles supplied in the bathroom. The view was beautiful right on the river with great big windows.

The spa was different and had a lovely relaxing room with fruit and healthy nibbles where you could relax and listen to music through the headphone supplied while looking straight out on the river. The steam room was a bit dark but relaxing and the laconium (rather than a sauna) was a nice change. There have been a lot of comments about the privacy around the hot tubs which while directly on the edge of the river are also in full view of the restaurant and bar. While a little more privacy would have been preferred you soon forgot when relaxing and enjoying watching the swans and ducks going by. We both tried a treatment (a full massage and a facial) and the products used were lovely.

The restaurant with the original ice house and the glass front area is lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed my freshly cooked breakfast and freshly squeezed orange juice on both days. It was the most highly rated of all our breakfasts in Ireland. Our dinner was also excellent as was the service. We had a €39 each allocation and could choose from the bar menu, the a la carte or the seafood menu. We opted for the seafood menu which was only €6 more and was excellent. Of special mention were the scallops which were plump, generous and perfectly cooked. As we were celebrating our upcoming anniversary we enjoyed the special touches on our dessert platter wishing us a happy anniversary. The French waitress was particularly helpful when we explained that my husband could not eat wheat and brought him gluten free rolls instead of the bread. Having experienced great difficulties in other hotels this level of awareness was most welcome. The rolls were also supplied promptly at breakfast.

Were there any down sides? Unfortunately I must admit there were but the positives did grossly out number them. As we were in a lower level room ‘ultramarine’ the level of privacy was poor with staff walking past the huge windows (it seemed such a shame to shut out the view with a net curtain). There was a fire door in the corridor very near our room which banged shut every time it was used. Lastly the spa is lovely but as the spa suite rooms are accessed via the spa corridor there is a lot of through traffic noise e.g children running and shouting and this intrudes into the quiet room and spa. Despite these minor gripes I would not hesitate to return and to recommend to others. A lovely, well managed hotel and although a little expensive I would say it was value for money compared to others we stayed in.

For information a laconium is a dry heat treatment room or sauna which lets the body heat up slowly and gently. The room is cooler than a traditional Finnish sauna -- 140ºF versus 175ºF -- and provides a more relaxing, less intense experience.

Dear Scottish-Reviewer,

We were both delighted to read your review.

We were particualry happy to read about your expereince with our "French Waitress" who's name is Emamuelle. She has been part of the team from pre-opening, she is without doubt one of the most professional, caring and passionate people we have worked with. She has a very bright future in this industry.

The points you mentioned are very vaild and do appear to have taken away from your time with us - we will, as always, be working to try and reduce the impact of these nuisances in the future.

Looking forward to welcoming you to the West of Ireland again in the future

Rooms are comfortable and have nice view. Staff were very accomodating and helpful. Muesli wasn't great, and was treated to multiple strands of hair in my omelette.
Dinner was very good.
Hotel is expensive, but then you have some very good spa facilities which probably bumps up the price.
Overall, apart from the hairy breakfast, our stay was good,
