This is a cool place! However, the room temperature and welcome were both warm: it’s just a novel, trendy place to stay. Some parts are really modern while others are very old and traditional – the old storage house for ice from the 19th century. For a bird-watching couple getting married, this would just be heaven! They market themselves very much as a wedding venue, but it is also a great place for normal tourists, as we were (though it’s a little more upmarket than what we would normally choose, though the price was not exorbitant). As Ireland is noted for wet weather, we chose to stay here on a day with continuous rain forecast – and the forecast was correct. But the good thing about this hotel was that it was fun anyway – relaxing in a hot tub, at a perfect temperature (not a tiny bit too hot nor too cool) and looking out across the river at the swallows swooping by was really very soothing. Then a quick pop into the sauna (again not too hot or too cool), which was also on the outside terrace. The staff were mostly eastern European, but friendly and helpful, and there was a good choice of things for breakfast. The restaurant menu in the evening looked nice but a bit pricey so we ate (well) at Crockets Inn, about 500 metres along the waterfront. The double bed was huge and soft, with a light down quilt, and the room had enormous picture windows out onto the river. When we arrived we were offered a glass of champagne (I would have preferred a fruity alcoholic cocktail, but you can’t please everyone!!!). You can have breakfast in bed at no extra charge, but we preferred to eat in the restaurant – many of the seats there look as though they are hot tubs!!! We always appreciate free wifi, which was fine in our room, but apparently doesn’t work in the old thick-walled rooms.
