We arrived on the Friday night of the Halloween weekend. I queried the price with reception as the €646 price for two nights for my wife and I including one evening meal and one treatment each was more than that quoted on the Internet for the same package on any other weekend. The girl on reception was quite friendy but firm that the cheaper packages had all gone by the time I booked and the price was the correct one. Fair enough then supply and demand I suppose, the dreaded Market forces.
Problem is it wasn't worth it. The riverside suite we had was ok but not only the decor was cold the temperature in the room was freezing, this improved as time passed but it was obvious the heating was not on long enough before we arrived. Strawberries and chocolate were lovely also bubbly was nice touch.
Had awful trouble getting music to work on the sound system the remote kept asking for battery replacement but then worked on tv.
We asked for recommendation about eating locally and one Lady crossly contradicted another
about where to go, don't fight in front of the guests guys. 45 minutes to get milk for my tea which only came after I rang again.
The view of the river the next morning was beautiful with the sun on the trees. I had a massage on the Saturday afternoon, ok but a bit prissy I thought 'no touching above the knee now'.
The steam room was out of service but dry heat room was nice.
Dinner and two breakfasts we good but nothing to write home about. I would have been happy enough except I feel I paid top dollar for a mediocre two nights.

D

Room Tip: The still room has great river views.

Everything was fantastic, the we stayed in a suite looking over the river, which had stunning views. The food was recommend in the reviews i read prior to visiting and it didn't disappoint. Only negative was there where sections of the suite in need of a lip of paint. The barman was excellent and was more than eager to use you as a tester in some of his cocktails. I will definitely return.

I'm writing this from my hotel room. Norah Jones and Dean Martin are playing softly in the background. While I was booking for tonight the manager sympathised with my impending journey from Dublin and when I arrived my bill was the corporate rate which is significantly cheaper than the normal single room rate. So nice to unexpectedly have a cheaper bill. Very nice receptionist mentioned that breakfast in bed was available at no extra cost and that they would send up fresh milk from the kitchen if I wanted tea or coffee rather than those hateful little pods of UHT milk! There's also an Apple TV in the room which is quite nice. Seriously high end sound system. Will definitely stay here next time I'm here on business although I'll arrive early so I can spend some time in the outdoor hot tub.

I'd have to start by openly declaring that my wife and I travelled to the Ice House Hotel with very high expectations and this may be a factor in how utterly disappointed we were with many aspects of our stay. The reasons I expected so much were as follows: firstly the price, secondly its Blue Book listing and thirdly the fact that our stay in their sister hotel, The Wineport Lodge, a few months earlier was probably the most relaxing and luxurious night away we have had in Ireland. We rarely get away for a couple of nights and after deciding to push the boat out and spend that bit extra we arrived for what we hoped would be as memorable an experience as we had had in Athlone a few months earlier. It unfortunately didn't deliver.

I imagined that the hotel would be tucked away in a quiet, remote setting next to the river but it is situated on a residential street fairly close to the town centre (which is undoubtably more convenient for some, especially those with families). Reception staff were reasonably efficient but fairly cold and a stark contrast to the natural, genuine friendliness that we had encountered the previous night in the wonderful Talbot Hotel in Belmullet. We were firstly shown to a room in the original part of the house which, while lovely and complete with a wooden bathtub, looked out onto the main road and was more akin to a nice room / suite in any long established hotel as opposed to the modern room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the river we had expected. To be fair however, the hotel had left a couple of chocolate chip cookies and a brownie on a plate with happy anniversary written on it which was a nice touch. After much debate, we gingerly asked if any other rooms were available and were given a choice of two of their modern rooms. One was at the far end of the hotel, beyond the spa, and was quite small and decoratively a bit cold. We opted for the other, named Vermillion, which is on the ground floor at the other end of the hotel beyond the kitchen. I forced some enthusiasm for my wife's sake but must admit to being disappointed. The room was sparse but in a cold way as opposed to a stylish minimalist way. As we were on the lower floor, there was a broad walkway just outside the full length windows with the result that the many staff and guests walking past couldn't help glancing in as they passed. As a result, we ended up leaving the net curtains closed for the two days rather than feel uncomfortable with the intermittent exposure to strangers as we sat in our room.

It was the lack of maintainance however that really disappointed us. The plug on the bath was missing (promptly replaced by the hotel once we notified them), there were two sets of wires sticking out of the wall where no lights had been attached, a large portion of the ceiling in the bathroom was damaged and cracked with dampness / mould (photo to be submitted), the surround Lund system didn't work and one of the bedside lamps was held together with Sellotape. We expected more, given what we had paid and the poor condition of the room certainly adversely effected our stay.

On a positive note however, the restaurant was fantastic. We had the fillet steak / langoustine special and seabass with mussels and a bottle of great, good value Malbec on the first evening and ordered room service from the bar menu the following evening. Staff in the restaurant were great and service prompt and efficient. Breakfast was also good.

In summary, if you're not committed to staying in Ballina and are just looking for somewhere for a relaxing break away, I believe that either The Wineport Lodge in Athlone or The Talbot Hotel in Belmullet are better options. If you are going to stay in the Ice House Hotel, I would advise requesting a room on either the first or second floor to allow you river views without everyone else having a view of you!

A gorgeous hotel. The welcome on arrival was great, warm and genuine. We stayed in the Heritage Suite. It was magnificent. Apple tv with surround sound, large wooden bath tub, enormous bed, period features, beautiful river view, one of the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in.
Dinner was excellent, and great service. Nice to see local options such as venison and crab on the menu.
A really great experience

Wow! This is what you will say when shown to your room - the bedrooms overlook the wide Moy river and the modern rooms all have floor to ceiling glass windows to take in the view across the river to the stunning autumn colours of Belleek Woods on the opposite bank. We had a fantastic 3 night break there in October. Check-in was speedy and friendly. We were shown to our deluxe room and the view was breathtaking - I'd have happily not left the room for 3 days - it was very comfortable with a huge bed, good quality bed-linen and a great bathroom. A nice touch is a the glass of prosecco offered on arrival - this was brought to our room as we took in that amazing view. The hotel makes the most of its riverside location, it is architecturally very interesting and the decor is mostly modern and clean and fresh with some great artwork which is worth checking out. There's a lovely cosy parlour in the original part of the house but for the most part we wanted to spend time on the river side. Staff were always very friendly. The restaurant and bar area overlooks the river too and is very comfortable in a way that not all contemporary design hotels are. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent. The bar-food was also very good and breakfasts were leisurely and relaxed with lots of newspapers for everyone. The spa is plush and staff there are very friendly and obliging. Some quibbles include the lack of knowledge at reception on how the apple tv and downloads worked, and also there was no internet access for guests. Elsewhere some more attention could be paid to mark and scuffs on the furniture but that's being very finicky. It's a very relaxed and luxurious small hotel and we had a truly wonderful stay.

Room Tip: All bar one of the bedrooms overlook the river.
