To enter this establishment there was an uphill climb, but it was all downhill from there (if you know what i mean). We won it on Ireland AM and i probably wouldn't go if we hadn't. while the leisure facilities seemed great, after finally making our way threw the maze of corridors we were disappointed to find almost everything was closed (at 5 p.m).
the breakfast was also very poor. wouldn't recommend ,wouldn't go back

Yeah, uber cool interiors, designer wallpaper is lovely but it does not maketh the hotel. Friendly Staff, comfort, space, excellent food, personality etc contributes to a great hotel and having spent a weekend away in the Downhill House Hotel in Ballina, I found loads of these ingredients. The reception staff could not have done enough for us (giving directions), bar man was so friendly and witty, esp discussing Ireland's chances of winning the 6 nations..we had a beautiful meal on the Saturday night;rack of lamb and yummy dessert. I could go on, we had a very comfortable room with a view onto the gardens, the hotel and Ballina is a great spot and I will be back again in the summer months.

I stayed at the downhill house hotel recently and one question springs to mind... how did the hotel get into this state!

Okay on the positive the location in Ballina is good... just outside the town, along a beautiful river, beside Murphy's bar and Longnecks nightclub. But the hotel itself is not so much downhill as snowballing avalanche of neglect.

The corridors have a real feeling of 'institution' and everything feels shabby.. knocks on the paint, grubby walls etc.

The rooms are at best average with dated furnishings and an old television. The cleaning also left much to be desired!

The food was again overpriced and service at breakfast was all over the place... Though I cannot fault the friendliness of the staff who were always smiling and helpful,

If you like rundown hotels... this is the place for you!

We stayed at the Downhill House Hotel in Ballina for 1 night during an escorted tour. So, the hotel was booked by the tour operator. The hotel is in a rustic setting next to a trout stream, which is a Guiness shade of brown from the peat. The rooms were clean. The food was good. Staff were courteous. At breakfast, when I asked for scrambled eggs instead of the poached or fried eggs, a large order was promptly brought out and put on the buffet line.
However, what we didn't like was the temperature of our room. The radiator was belching heat, and I could not figure out how to shut off the heat. So we opened the windows which really didn't help. It is true that I did not call the front desk on this issue. So I suppose I have to give them the benefit of the doubt to some extent.
A more minor annoyance was the black and white tv which had a remote that was literally taped together and really didn't control the tv. Of course, who comes to Ireland to watch tv. So, again a minor annoyance.

We were a party of four and had two large adjoining rooms which was perfect, each of the rooms had both a double and a single bed. The receptionist was most helpful. The staff in the bar (mainly non Irish, which is usual) were friendly and efficient. One of them brought to our attention a special heritage day which was being held in the town that day. We weren't aware of it until he told us. There is a lovely garden at this hotel, with big old trees and there is a beautiful babbling brook alongside. As I love the sound of water, this was most welcome. The hotel is a mile or so outside the town centre, but as we were driving this wasn't a problem for us. We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel and would have no objection to returning to it.

Was down at the weekend. Rooms were beautiful, food very tasty as was one of the bar staff, Louise, who went the extra mile for the guests that weekend. Looking forward to returning

We stayed here during a tour of Ireland in April 2007. During a week-long tour, this was our favorite hotel. The location is charming, and is a good setting for taking a walk, situated near to a river with abundant wildlife (we spotted several blue herons during a short walk).
Rooms were clean, with comfortable beds, and with lots of space. We enjoyed tipping back some Guinness in the attractive bar area, and found the hotel breakfast and dinner to be some of the best we had in Ireland.
It surely was "craic" - good times had by all, and good memories to take home.
