“A wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

We had the pleasure of staying at Mount Falcon for 2 days for a friends wedding and almost all aspects of the stay were excellent.

Although we only stayed in a standard room it was a great size and very well presented. The only downside to the room was the fact there was no cold water in the taps, the water was scolding hot (great for a shower, not so when you want to clean your teeth).

Breakfast was very good and the waitress we had each morning was very friendly. We also had our wedding dinner at the hotel and the food was very good.

The pool was a very relaxing area and even though we didnt have ours with us it looked very child friendly. The sauna was rubbish, it was practically cold both times I used it.

Overall I loved this hotel and would have gladly stayed another 2 days.

Before we even arrived at this hotel we experienced some of the worst customer service in a long time. Firstly, the code given to us to receive the measily €10 off that wedding guests get didn't work properly and many of the guests booked elsewhere thinking the hotel was booked out - it wasn't! Then, upon booking by phone I asked if there were any special offers for people staying 3 nights - I was told "No and there won't be" but later found a special offer advertised on the website (when I phoned to amend my booking I was told that member of staff couldn't authorise the change and by the time somebody got back to me the offer was gone and they wouldn't honour it. The manager who called likened the situation to booking with Ryanair which didn't bode well!!!). The website was also very low on information - e.g. nowhere did it mention whether or not the hotel had a gym - we had to call to find out details.

Upon arrival, the reception staff were friendly and our delux double was nice enough. It did have two single beds pushed together rather than a double bed (a personal pet hate of mine) and a badly fitted carpet which constantly tripped us up but overall it was comfortable, spacious, clean and warm. The bathroom was nice and had a separate bath and shower which was nice. Again it was spacious and clean. I'd rate the room as slightly above average but nothing special.

The spa was very disappointing. The tiny pool was impossible to swim in as there was no lane and not enough space if you weren't completely alone (even one or two children playing got in your way). The jacuzzi was luke warm. I didn't use the gym but it was quite small.

The breakfast is the thing that leaves the most lasting impression - it was HORRENDOUS! Dry rusk filled pudding, cheap low percentage meat sausages and bacon with more fat on than meat!!! Uggghhh! The cold buffet was a bit better but the cured meats looked like they'd been on display for much longer than they should have been. The potato cakes on our second morning were much better but unfortunately we weren't given a choice on the third morning as we were "treated" to a hot buffet alongside the cold and more of the horrible full Irish. No thanks!

Thankfully the food on the actual wedding day was lovely. A word of warning if you are planning to stay here when not part of a wedding party though - the music is extremely loud and can be heard in the rooms. Not exactly conducive to R&R!!

One final example of bad service occured on our third day. Having popped to the spa in just our robes (our room was beside the stairs to the spa) we were horrified when our doorcard chose that exact moment to stop working. We returned to the spa reception and asked if somebody could get us a new card as we didn't particularly want to traipse past a whole load of wedding guests (from another wedding) in our robes. The guy on reception called the main reception desk but then laughed as he told us we would have to go ourselves to get the card. Not so much as an apology for the inconvenience!!! This wasn't the last time the card stopped working by the way!

All in all a very disappointing experience. Certainly not worth the money and would never stay here again. We did go out for dinner on our first night and went to the Ice House Hotel (unfortunately they were booked out or we would have stayed there). The food was sensational and the hotel looked fab, half the price too! - next time!

Room Tip: As far away from the function room as possible - ideally a different hotel!

Our favourite place to stay in the west of Ireland; a beautiful hotel with fantastic, naturally friendly staff who always make you feel at home. Add to that, gorgeous food, locally sourced, top quality and respectfully prepared, a lovely spa, mature, leafy grounds to stroll in, a picturesque backdrop and you have all of the ingredients of a relaxing break. It probably helps that the when the sun shines in Mayo, this place always seem to catch the best of it! Have just left (reluctantly) and already wondering when we can get back again.

We had our wedding here and although we may be biased, we really enjoyed the experience. Wish could give higher rating!
Got lucky with good weather and had an outdoor ceremony, which went without a hitch. The background of perfectly kept lawns, trees and lake, is relaxing and comforting.
Many guests commented on the high quality of the food, the beautiful grounds/building and setting. The staff incredibly friendly, hospitable and friendly. It felt like our own luxury home for the day. You wonder around the hallways in slippers and robe and it doesn't feel out of place! That's how relaxed it is.
Had small misunderstanding with a table layout on the day of the wedding, which got corrected right away without question as soon as we brought it up.
Families and non-wedding guests staying in lodges did not intrude on the wedding in the least and in fact offered kind words of congratulations and compliments.
It was worth every penny and hope other brides have as good a day there!

Room Tip: All rooms are fantastic. If there's a "loud" function on, request quieter rooms which...

Top marks to the management for excellent service, friendly staff, and great food. Generally a nice relaxing atmosphere in the lounge, library and bar areas.

Nice walks though forest trails and around the lake and river for the outdoor people . Fishing on the famous Moy in the summer time would be a treat and we hope to return for the grilse run on July.

the hotel also cater for family's in the located around the grounds - wooden houses in the woods being the 5 star houses. A limited number of the houses are dog friendly for those interested!!

thanks and see you in the summer. ...

Room Tip: If travelling with a group or large family - consider the lodge as an alternative to the main hotel...

Stayed here on a Saturday night. Got an excellent deal and our package included light afternoon tea and a bottle of prosecco. Had this in the beautiful lounge, it was fab as was the service. Our deal also included an upgrade to a deluxe room subject to availability. We were a bit disappointed this wasn't available. Our room (number 3) was on the first floor overlooking the car park. Lovely room but decided we would see if we could move to one the other side of the building to avail of a nicer view. None were available but they did have a larger corner room on the second floor (room 18).

Although also looking onto the car park it was a much nicer room as it was higher up and had velux windows with beautiful views of the trees, there were also velux windows in the bathroom which was very nice as there was so much light. Would highly recommend this room, it was more private too as it was at the end of the building so noone passing by. We were offered the option of upgrading to a suite for a €100 which was a good offer. After viewing Conor's gap though we decided not to. Lovely room but actually maybe a bit too big and no nice views, also it just didnt feel very cosy to us.

The rooms are beautiful with every possible luxury. Gorgeous bathrooms with double sinks and top notch products. There were lovely bathrobes and slippers (so soft and comfortable and had the falcon motif like ob the plates at dinner etc, a nice touch). Lots of other nice little touches in the room eg magazines and free water.

What I noticed the most was the high level of cleaniness throughout the whole manor, it is spotless and so well maintained. Just beautiful including the lovely grounds. Not an easy task maintaining a building like this to such a high standard. We ate in the Kitchen restaurant and for the prices we were expecting a lot. We were not disappointed, it was excellent, the food, the wine and the service, all top notch. Had a particularly friendly waiter called Zach I think. He was so nice. Decided to try sthg different and had the guinea fowl for my main, it was delicious as was my scallop starter. Loved the dining experience, the restaurant itself is very beautiful aswell. Breakfast was lovely also, no complaints.

Overall I would highly recommend staying here. We were given a voucher of €25 to return (very nice idea) and we would certainly love to. As a youngish couple the only thing we noted is that overall there was an older demographic in the hotel in general. But there were also a good few families so I think it suits all age groups.

Had a fantastic two night break here for our 1st Wedding anniversary, Stayed in The Wallpole suite, which was great, furnished to a standard you would expect in a country house hotel, Living room, bedroom and bathroom were huge, with fantastic views across the estate.
Staff were very friendly, although sometimes a little stretched at busy times. Food in the restaurant was excellent.
All in all very good, and if we head Ballina way again, would certainly stay at Mount Falcon
