These cottages gave us a real flavour of what it must have been like to eke out an existence........ a beautiful area which has seen so much sadness.

The history was limited, would have like more, the creepy manequines could have been left out. The unexpected bee hive hut was cool!

It's not much but worth a visit to appreciate it. €3 fee was fine to support the upkeep of preserving the history. Very steep but fairly short walk up a paved path. Won't take more than 15 minutes or so to see it and is walking distance from Fort Dunbeg and The Stonehouse Cafe.

The afternoon we took the drive around Slea Head Loop the fog moved in, so we couldn't see much. Fortunately we were able to visit the famine cottages close enough to see. Visiting here added to our knowledge of the famine years, after having visited the famine museum last summer. Hardcore reality, but a necessary know for anyone interested in Irish history.

Be prepared to be sad. Worthwhile for the history it represents. It is amazing to think that these cottages were still inhabited in the 20th century!
