We'd been looking forward to staying at Ballintaggart as part of our travels around south west Ireland. The website had really sold the place and the reviews looked good. They were misleading....

Perhaps the first sign that something was amiss was the "Out of Order" notice on a snack machine by the front door. That could apply to the whole place. We were grumpily greeted by unsmiling staff. We went to our drab dark room with its flaking yellow wallpaper and its noisy extractor fan. We tried to cook dinner in the kitchen which smelled of too many years of grease. And that's before we get to faulty lightbulbs, the absence of its advertised internet access, and the generally battered decor of the place. What's really annoying though is that at 70 euros a night for a double room, this was the most expensive place on our whole trip.

Its a grand old building - but its being neglected and poorly maintained. Dingle is a great place to visit. But Ballintaggart is disappointing.

I stayed in Ballintaggart last year for over a week and i fell in love with the place almost immediately. There is such a mysteroius, romantic feel to this place, its almost impossible to describe unless you go there. The location is fantastic, with five minutes to the beach and not too far from the town although at night time I would recommend to stay in the house..strange thing happen there.....The staff were amazing I have to say, Keith and Nick would have you in stitches laughing and were so full of information about everything from the local area to the whole country.Dont miss the weekly quiz either!! Everyone was so friendly, ill never forget it. I strongly recommend this place for anyone ...

Don't be put off by what might come across as a casual approach when you contact these people - it's all part of a well crafted plan to make relaxed holiday accomodation look easy. We were touring Ireland during a long trip around Europe, checked in for a weekend and stayed two weeks!! The accomodation is everything you could wish for - light, clean, airy, warm, very reasonably priced. Also it is in west Kerry, something that has become a critical feature for me when assessing holiday accomodation in ireland - it has GOT to be in west Kerry. Hope to return to Dingle in the next couple of years to renew old acquaintances - there will bw only one choice for accomodation, that will be Ballintaggart House Hostel.

We stayed in the Ballintaggart House Hostel in August 2003, had a really mellow time. 21st century facilities but a timeless atmosphere.
Relaxed, uniquely Irish yet cosmopolitan atmosphere, largely due to the staff who were helpful and thoughtful but never in your face.We will be going back, and soon. One word of warning - taking a cup of coffee into the sitting room in the evening can be very damaging to your plans for an early night. We were highly entertained over four nights by fireside philosophy, poetry, flamenco guitar, and a really absurd but intense argument about whether Eamon De Valera was left-handed.
