Thought i would mention the Purple Heather. They specialise in bar food, morning coffee and afternoon tea.

The proprietors name is Grainne O'Connell. She is a very friendly lady with a wealth of knowledge about the area all freely given.

Four of us called in for afternoon tea. Scones, butter, cream and jam with lovely cakes It was well served and prepared and represented good value for money.

We stayed at the Park Hotel in Kenmare and the staff there recommended this adorable pub to us for lunch. We liked it so much we went there twice. Hearty sandwiches, wonderful large salads, marvelous soups - with large portions, all served with a smile by our friendly and efficient waitress. The place was crowded both days but we were lucky to score a table both times.

The purple heather, again owned by the owners of the Shelburne Lodge, has the atmosphere of upscale Irish dining at it's best. The menu has a good variety of Irish dishes to choose from. The service is excellent. The dining area is tastefully decorated, and is designed to create a relaxing and stimulating atmosphere.

I've been to Kenmare twice and both times stopped by The Purple Heather. Some of the older Irish pubs can be slightly dark and a little grotty, but the Purple Heather is clean, cosy, welcoming and the food is comforting. On my first visit I took refuge from the rain and sat by the fire having tea and a toasted special. My husband got the chowder. Both set us up nicely for the long walks we did around Kerry later that evening.
