Description: "Kenmare, in Co Kerry, has its unfair share of places to eat, but you'll miss one of its finest attractions if you confine yourself to the restaurants that feature in guide books. Wharton's Traditional Fish & Chips, in the town centre, is a gem. My cod was encased in the finest, lightest batter, into which crushed black peppercorns had been incorporated. It was so fresh I swear I saw it twitch as it hit the oil. The chips are hand-cut from potatoes that are, amazingly, chosen for their "fryability". And they have cider vinegar if you fancy a change from the stuff you usually get in chippers..." Tom Doorley (Irish Times)

I found that in many places in Ireland and the UK that fish and chips are too often over priced and substandard. Wharton's was a very nice departure from this. The fish (either cod or hake most days), is one giant fresh filet that you can watch them take out and batter directly in front of you. Perfect crispiness with a delicious tartare sauce accompaniment. The chips were high quality as well, and i would highly recommend the curry sauce as a dip.

One note: if you want ambiance this is not the place. If you want good food at reasonable prices then give this place a shot.

We bought fish and chips here and they were excellent! Make sure you are hungry, as they are big portions! I had the cod in batter and my husband had the hake in batter, both were excellent and cooked freshly while we waited... Yummy!!

My wife and I read reviews of Whartons. We decided to try it our first night in our rented house. Arrived at restaurant about 8:00 Sunday evening only to be told that they were sold out of "fish". We were amazed and disappointed and then ate at several other places for the next four days. then we tried it a little earlier and we succeeded this time. We have only had Cod fish for fish and chips in our travels before but Wharton's offered a choice of Cod or Hake. Never heard of hake, but we saw it at other places priced higher than Cod. At Whartons, you get a beautifully battered big piece of fish (either one the same) and a mound of freshly and locally made and cut chips nicely deep fried for E9. Soft drinks (diet coke) was 1E a piece. So for 20E, two can eat grandly. Really, this is excellent fish and chips. Down stairs is take out only. You can take your order upstairs and eat it in a loft second floor. Very nice.... very reasonable, and cheaper than the other Fish and Chips place in Kenmare. If you are here, and want a good basic fish and chips meal, you cant do much better than this place. Thanks !!!!
