Owner description: Derreen is a woodland garden that has a selection of narrow paths leading to the sea. You can choose a short stroll of about 40 minutes or take all day discovering the 8 miles of paths. Many of the plants were brought back from the Himalayas by the Victorian plant hunters. There is a cafe selling lunch or a selection of delicious hand made cakes during the summer months.

Went there with a large family group on a beautiful August day. The views are magnificent. The walks are fairly easy, even for older people. A beautiful, peaceful place

A bit disappointed with this. Described as one of the 10 best gardens in Ireland - not by a long shot. I think the best time to see this place is in May when the rhododendrons are flowering. Apart from that there is little colour in the garden. Some nice ferns and big trees and nice views by the water but all in all I wouldn't bother.

There is an admission charge. This is paid for by putting money in a box. Nobody collects it or was around when we called. There is supposed to be a tea room facility. Again nothing doing.

Most irritating is when you leave. Following the sign to the exit brings you to a T-junction on a quiet road with no signs. Prepare to get lost. Satnav was no good either. It wouldn't kill the owners to put up a small sign indicating the way to Kenmare.

This is a lovely place for a walk. There is no attendant but a donation is requested on entry. The gardens are lively with many different walks, fabulous views of the coast and hidden fairy houses to discover!

Visited 23 July 2014. No staff so paid fee (€7 per adult) into box on garage door. Note was on display from Derreen owners about storm damage in Feb 2014, acknowledgement that garden was 'untidy' and a general lament about their bad luck with garden in recent years. Rambled for about 45 minutes. We were totally disappointed and annoyed to incur any entrance fee at all. Rhododendrons no longer flowering and little else to see. Paths completely untended. Rubbish accumulating along the shore. Looks like no gardener has been engaged here for quite some time. What a waste!

I was looking forward to Dereen but I was sadly disappointed: it is in desperate need of some serious horticultural / landscape renewal. No question, the grounds and environment are fantastic and to some extent they mask what is the real problem, namely, the lack of serious horticultural and arboricultural work required to both maintain many of the specimen trees and replace others that are clearly on their way out. As examples, both the Eucalyptus globulus and Acacia melanoxlyon are in appalling condition and should be removed. Hopefully the owners can source some funding so they can develop a workable management plan designed to return these gardens to their former glory.
