Owner description: Derreen is a woodland garden that has a selection of narrow paths leading to the sea. You can choose a short stroll of about 40 minutes or take all day discovering the 8 miles of paths. Many of the plants were brought back from the Himalayas by the Victorian plant hunters. There is a cafe selling lunch or a selection of delicious hand made cakes during the summer months.

“Disappointing, unkept, tea rooms were closed, bad map, bad value!”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

We visited 31st July '13 in the run up to August bank holiday wkend, there wasn't a sinner around, we paid, tea rooms were closed & we walked for approx 40 mins, despite the big average advertised, this is a very short walk, no matter which path u take. It's obvious from the no. of Rhodedendron that it would be spectacular in May/June. We felt short changed from the experience I'm sad to say.

“nothing special and not worth €7 to visit”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Visited these gardens in early July, was expecting something really special, gardens didnt live up to our expectations! €7 a head too much, we regretted paying it, you won't see anything here you wouldn't see in any free forest park! We went there looking forward to a nice cup of tea before our walk through the beautiful gardens, tea shop wasn't open - is it ever open! Don't go there expecting the tea shop to be open - we visited during a busy holiday period so if it isn't open then when will it be open?
Personally I would give this one a miss - definitely not one of the top ten gardens in Ireland!

“Expensive for what it is”
Reviewed July 5, 2013

It was raining when we went but we didn't melt. The garden is in a wilderness type of setting rather than a formal garden so it did feel a bit of a rip off paying 34€ for 6 of us to walk through it when there was little formality in its upkeep. Nevertheless it is very pretty. The little fairy houses were cute. We kept running into "private" signs which is fine but sometimes they were deadends and we had to backtrack. The map made no sense at all. So we gave up on it. Didn't look like the tearoom was open so we left. We were there mid week so maybe not surprising.
Nice for a walk but I won't be back.

“Beautiful gardens”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

My friend and I went to the Gardens on a beautiful sunny morning. Well worth a visit. There is an honesty box for payment and you also receive a helpful map of the gardens. As we are both Australians we were very impressed with the Aussie Ferns. The whole gardens is so lovely and very well laid out. We were spoilt with the lovely sunny morning and we sat looking out over the lake for quite some time. We found the toilets clean.
