Owner description: Derreen is a woodland garden that has a selection of narrow paths leading to the sea. You can choose a short stroll of about 40 minutes or take all day discovering the 8 miles of paths. Many of the plants were brought back from the Himalayas by the Victorian plant hunters. There is a cafe selling lunch or a selection of delicious hand made cakes during the summer months.

The gardens are lovely as ever with wonderful rhododendrons and azaleas at this time of year. Unfortunately, the toilets were a disgrace with no running water and left blocked. Not what you would expect having paid to go in. There was no one there it seemed to register a complaint today - 6 May 2013.

Went into Derreen Gardens with 4 adults and four children...map was great for planning the walks...spent two hours there...met great people from scotland who kindly shared their picnic..unfortunately the tea rooms were closed...the gardens themselves are about to reach their peak in the next 2 weeks the start of the rhodendrons etc...spectacular trees...the tree ferns are just like Jurassic park...my son was completly blow away being a dinosaur expert!! I would say that the entry fee for adults of seven euro is a little high but for a family 2 adults and four children its 20 euro, and for children its 2 euro but ultimately it is so worthwhile and please visit this amazing gem of a garden which is hidden for mass tourism,,,and wher did we go for food to Josie...go there amazing...but thats another review!!

Maybe because we were here in October, the gardens seemed interesting but not particularly beautiful.

really pretty, would be even better in spring and summer when everything out. Excellent walking with little areas to sit and relax. Excellent place for children and eldery as the walks are marked for easiness.

This gem takes a little effort to find and the approach gives little away. The parking area and semi-derelict green houses don't promise much. However, when you get beyond the house you begin to get some idea of the arboreal treasures ahead. The pathways through the woods are well signposted and quaintly named, e.g. King's Oozy. Earlier owners, who were part of the governance of the British Empire, brought myriads of plants from exotic locations and they thrive in the moist warm climate of this locality. The estate is most interesting, having been a summer home for generations of historically interesting families.
The surrounding scenery of mountain and sea surround this glorious location. The best time visit is May/June when most trees are bloom
