Kilkeana Farmhouse offers the most relaxing vacation ever! The location is brilliant, the surrounding lands and animals will stir your soul. We loved chopping the wood and having a little fire every night even though the week we stayed was a heatwave, The house is outfitted very well. We found this to be a great location for exploring ROK and the Beara Peninsula. Kenmare has a lot to offer with great restaurants and shopping (even a stone circle). Cant wait to go back. Plus, the hosts are wonderful, Thanks a million!
We really liked this place, it is very well maintained inside and out. The surroundings are beautiful; we took memorable walks up and down the narrow country road every evening. It is so quiet, and you'll see cows, sheep, a four-horned goat, many birds and maybe even a stoat. So why not a full five stars?
- First, it is three miles from the closest town, which means you'll need a designated driver if you want to enjoy a pub in the evening. This may or may not matter to you, and it is very obvious from just looking at a map. For us, the 6-person capacity was more important, but Kenmare is very lovely and we missed being so far from it sometimes.
- Second, we found the beds a little firm. If you like firm beds, this is not a problem.
- Third, we had some internet connectivity troubles. Mary and Jim are wonderful hosts, and got people out to fix this quickly. However, even with the wifi fixed, if you are hoping for high-speed wifi, this location really is too remote for that. It is satellite based and there are compromises that go with that. I wasn't there for the internet, but still noticed: we took so many beautiful pictures, but had a hard time sharing them. On the other hand, if you want to unplug a bit, this could be an extra plus for you.
- Last, there is a separate charge for your electric usage based mostly on home and water heating. This wasn't obvious to us when we booked so it came as a surprise. I've never stayed anywhere else that charged in that way. It isn't a deal-breaking thing, and the overall price of the stay was reasonable even with the extra 65 Euro bump at the end. Still, it is something that anyone booking this house should know about.
Overall, I would highly recommend Kilkeana Farmhouse.
Mary and James obviously take great pride in their rental. It's a beautifully renovated house from the 1800's that's been in the family since it was built. It offers spectacular scenery, plenty of space in the house for our party of 5, and it's very close to both Kenmare and Killarney. The location couldn't be better. The owners live just down the hill and are available if there are any emergencies, which is a comfort. They also have sheep, James very kindly offered to let us watch him feed them, and gave us a tour of the countryside while giving us an incredible history lesson.
I highly recommend staying here, it was definitely our favorite accommodations of our entire trip!

My husband and I are just back from our dream vacation in Ireland and stayed at Kilkeana Farm during the second half of our June trip. All the comforts of home; large and spacious, comfy beds, a lovely woodstove that we used nearly every night. With a fully equipped kitchen we were able to cook breakfast and/or dinner when we chose. Even had a cow parade one morning as we were having tea and all the cows walked down from the upper fields down the lower, lazily taking their time. Mary was lovely and explained how the heat worked etc and even gave us the name of a taxi driver since we didn't want to drive to Kenmare and have some liquid refreshemtent and drive home (just a 5 minute drive but didn't wish to chance it). A peaceful and serene setting with lovely views of the Mugillacuddy Reefs. Would be a great place for little ones! You won't be disappointed when you book Kilkeana!
Thanks again for a wonderful memory of our time in Ireland.
We spent 4 wonderful nights at the Kilkeana Farm House. The view was absolutely breathtaking, and Mary and James were fantastic hosts. They were able to recommend some nice drives on the Iveragh Peninsula that provided great views and avoided the tour buses. Another highlight of our trip was James' tour of the farm. On our last day we took our two boys, aged 4.5 and 7, on a hill walk for more great views.
I only wish we would have stayed longer!
The house was wonderfully restful and quiet apart from the sound of the birds singing. The view from the house is amazing too. It was spotlessly clean and entirely ready for our stay. The location could not be better as despite feeling you are miles from anywhere you are in fact only a short drive from the main road. In less than 5 minutes you are in Kenmare, a lovely town full of good bars and restaurants. We drove to Killarney, Dingle Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry and the scenery is spectacular. James and Mary were so welcoming and available should we have needed anything. Our first trip to Ireland and we were so lucky to have found such a lovely house in a beautiful spot. Thank you to James and Mary!
