“if you want a clean breakfast table dont stay here”
Reviewed September 22, 2007

Not up to standard, alot of rubbish strewn around outside, have no idea where they got their stars. Cups, silverware, table not really clean, entrance wall caved in. A bit of a kip really.

After 4 hours drive from Dublin, we were expecting to get to a nice hotel in the Kerry coast with an advertised leisure centre. Just to mention that we are a young couple (29) and we just wanted a nice place for a couple of nights, nothing fancy, just nice and comfortable.
Well, the hotel is more of a hostel like of place with a horrible smell of damp and a pretty average facilities. The leisure centre is a tiny dirty swimming pool and a small auna. The advertised gym is inexistent. We were even told by the owners that nobody used it anyway... No TV in the room and the whole place very very average.
Until here, a bit disappointing, but still, we got used to the idea. It is not the first time we've slept in places like this. For a couple of days, it'd be OK.
The worst part came when in our second night there, we were told that the family owning the hotel were celebrating a party and catering for 15 or 17 people. Fine, no problem, we could not use the restaurant facilities on that night. We left early and went to Dingle to a lovely restaurant in the harbour.
We came back at around 10pm and since the hotel was literally packed with family members, we had no other alternative but to go to bed. The party went on and on and at around 3am we were waked up by the owners and their family who were FINALLY going to bed. We could perfectly hear every single word, laugh and noise they made with no consideration whatsoever for the guests sleeping at their hotel!. Some of them even tried to get in our room at some stage (luckily locked at the time).
The total price was 160euro!!! For an average smelly hostel and a horrible night. We'll never go back.

We at Harbour House welcome all feedback but instead of, an inaccurate review we would appreciate if guests would bring all issues to our attention during their stay giving us and them the opportunity to put any issues that may arise, right, while they are staying with us. It is very hard to offer any come back when no issues are brought to light at the time, leaving issues to be aired to anonymous review gives an unbalance and unfair feedback.
Even though this review is anonymous, we actually remember our guests well as they were the only guests staying at the guest house, over the stated weekend, we had chosen not to take any bookings this particular weekend. When our guests arrived unexpected after a long drive with an Internet booking, we honoured the booking immediately, we informed the guests that there was going to be a family party and actually invited them to join us if they wished.
The family celebration was in the restaurant area of the house, which is nowhere near their accommodation. Our guests may have chosen to retire to their bedroom but there are three lounges in the house. The largest of which is upstairs and at the back of the house they could have had this lounge all to them selves if they had wished.
Firstly to correct the guest, Harbour House is not a Hotel, Harbour House is a guesthouse and we have not advertised ourselves as anything but a guesthouse. We do not advertise that we provide televisions in the rooms, we are situated in one of the most beautiful areas in the country the majority of our guest are the out door type enjoying the beauty of the dramatic landscape, the miles and miles of golden beaches, the mountains, the forestry etc. We do have three lounges, two of which have satellite television.
Regarding the facilities. The in door heated pool is a very popular facility for the vast majority of our guests, we are sorry that it was not to their standards. May we also add that we charge a similar rate for B&B in the local area, yet we offer so much more, Swimming pool, GYM, Sauna, Restaurant and amazing panoramic views of the Sea.
With regard to the gym, as reported incorrectly by our guest, we do have a fully functioning gym with state of the art equipment, which is exactly the same as pictured in our website it is located directly above the swimming pool.
Our Sauna designed for use by six people very comfortably. As the guests were the only couple they had exclusive use of the sauna we find again these comments very unfair and completly inaccurate.
With regard to the smell of damp, there is absolutely no damp in the house, the vast majority of the house has been built in the last ten years.
We are a family run guest house and really take a personal approach to all our guests we are genuinely disappointed that these guests, which we feel, were made so very welcomed at Harbour House, left with such a bad opinion of the our guest house. But I guess you can’t please everyone even though we do always try at Harbour House and will continue to for all our new and returning customers. Our repeat business is in excess of 80%. We must be doing something Right! Our Guest Book is full of reviews from when we opened in 1994 till present day and is full of glowing reviews a sample of which can be viewed on our website.

Arriving in Tralee in mid-afternoon with two days unbooked in Kerry, we found the Tourist Information center and quickly got some recommendations for lodging, including Harbour House. Since we had the time and daylight to keep on driving to Castlegregory (where my family is from), we chose Harbour House, which is up in the Maharees above Castlegregory proper.

At Harbour House you are right on the coast with the sea air and the views of water on several sides and the magnificent mountains, including Mount Brandon.

Patricia and Ronnie Fitzgibbon are very cordial hosts who will leave you alone or socialize with you depending on how you want to play it. This is exactly what I and my family appreciate. Good example: When a relative came to visit me and my wife and son, Patricia came by, totally unprompted by us, with a tea service, which was exactly the right thing. Ronnie is a worldly guy, an accomplished diver who has been around the world on expeditions, from the Sechelles to the Maldives to the Florida coast. He's also a fascinating conversationalist with a wry sense of humor. His underwater photos decorate the wall by the parlor. (People come from all over to dive here, by the way.)

The rooms are rustic, neat and clean, and the showers--for me, the singlemost important way to judge accommodations--can be counted on to deliver the goods, with hot water aplenty.

They offer a good menu and wine list along with the usual Guinness, Heinekin, and other brews. And, they served the best breakfasts we had during our entire England-Scotland-Ireland trip!
