We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a Groupon deal.

We found the food lovely - we ate in the bar both nights. Ballyheigue is a small town so there is a limited number of options available.

We found this hotel to be a good base and traveled north to Ballybunion and south to Dingle. Tralee town is only a 15 min drive away. Banna beach is also only a 5 min drive away. Ballyheighue beach is directly behind the hotel.

The hotel itself is old style, actual keys (not cards) to open the rooms doors with heavy key rings attached which you leave in reception, be sure to remember to lock your door when leaving your room, we walked away a couple of times forgetting to do so. There was a 14'' portable television in the room. Our room was very spacious and clean and we had a nice view of the sea.

We booked this trip through a Groupon deal which was very good, we stayed Friday & Saturday nights and it also helped that we were in the middle of a heatwave which made a huge difference as we could go to the beach which was very pleasant. The beach is right behind the hotel. The hotel itself is a basic 2 star but rooms/linen clean though beds and towels are not the most modern. The food was ok wouldnt rave. There isnt anywhere else to eat in Ballyheigue except three takeaways, you would probably have to travel to Tralee, also there is no ATM in the village, but it was a very relaxing weekend which we badly needed, and the people everywhere are so friendly. Good entertainment in the hotel and nearby pubs.

I have just returned from a two night stay in the White Sands Hotel. My friend and I booked a two-night deal through "Pigsback.com" which entitled us to a family room. The family room was not available for our chosen dates so we agreed to a twin room. The woman on reception was off hand when we checked in and not very welcoming, she basically told us that we didn't want to use the lift with our luggage because it was all the way at the back of the hotel and she didn't want to show us through and anyway, we'd be fine going up the stairs.

When we opened the door of the room there was a double bed so we went back down, after finding the lift ,and returned to reception via the dining room with our luggage. We told her that we had requested a twin room. She informed us that there were twin beds in the room and that they were pushed together. All we had to do, she said, was take the double bed spread off and push them apart and we could move around any furniture that was in our way. Echoes of Faulty Towers came into my mind. We found our way back to the lift and up to the room where we rearranged the furniture and discovered that the head boards were screwed to the wall so we would just have to manage without them, we opened the window as the room was very hot, and two greyhounds that were in a pen below starting barking enthusiastically.

Back in reception we asked our friendly receptionist where we could eat with our twenty euro voucher which was part of the deal and were told that it was bar food only, I asked if the dogs were locked up at night and she denied all knowledge of them and said she had never had any complaints about dogs before. I hadn't actually complained, I just asked the question but she was immediately on the defensive. Never mind; off to the bar for our dinner. We asked the staff if the fish in the "Traditional Fish and Chips" was caught locally and discovered it was frozen fish so I opted for "Home Made Lasagne" and my companion ordered "Home Made Burger". The lasagne was "nuked" to death, it was of an interesting rubbery texture that can only be achieved by extended contact with a microwave. The burger looked delicious but sadly was bloody in the middle, ok for a steak but not a good idea with minced beef. The waitress took it back to the kitchen and it took half an hour for a cooked burger to arrive by which time I had finished my meal and my companion was so cross that she really couldn't enjoy hers. There was an air of lethargy among the staff in the bar, they all cleary wished themselves somewhere else.

We found that the water in the bath drained very slowly so by the time you finished taking a shower you were up to your shins in water. We discussed mentioning this to our buddy on reception but decided against it in case she handed us a plunger and some caustic soda, so we just shut up and put up with it.

The staff at breakfast were very friendly and helpful, on the first morning we were in quite early for breakfast and the food was very dry and had obviously been cooked sometime before, on the second day we were later going down and they were very busy and had run out of things so our food was freshly cooked and delicious.

The hotel is quite dated but was clean and serviceable and the beds were comfotable (the dogs don't bark at night), some of the staff were lovely, some were uninterested. The receptionist seems to be a law unto herself and you certainly need to have your sense of humour in good working order if you are visiting there.

The White Sands hotel was a perfect location for a chilaxing 2 night getaway. Hotel room very clean & food in the bar - Jimmy Brownes just yummy. Stones throw from the beach & the golf course. We stayed on the beach all day due to weather but Tralee & Kilkarney not that for away if wet. Staff very friendy & it was a treat to order your hot breakfast & not get it from a buffet. Sleep quality not great - but that was die to the heatwave! Only a 2 Star Hotel in rating BUT a 5 Star experience

Stayed at the White Sands for a couple of nights two weeks ago. Staff very friendly and helpful, great food in the bar and hotel. Brilliant atmosphere both nights we were there. My only complaint was we had booked a double but given a twin. The hotel was fully booked that weekend so didn't want to make a fuss. Can't wait to go again
