I have forgotten the docent's name, but she was a student of antiquities and she knew a lot about the castle and castles in general. She was engaging and entertaining and really made the tour a lot of fun.

This was a lovely tour. A vast amount of information/history. It makes the history more real having walked on the original floors. There is a lovely view of the river Feale and the racecourse. As the tour is just under a hour and is free it is well worth a visit. The guide Annette was superb with the attention to detail and answered all our questions. The only recommendation i would make is that the reception should have a visitor book for signing.

Always considered it just a wall so was pleasantly surprised when i took some visitors to see it. The guide was excellent and informative and brought the whole history of the castle alive. We learned quite a lot about castles in general and got nice views of the racecourse from it.. even better the tour is free. Recommended visit...ps. also include a visit to the monorail and museum.

A partly ruined castle/tower house originally built in the 13th/14th century. There is a free guided tour, which is the only way that you can see the inside. Only two of the conjoined towers remain, and the rooms are empty of any furniture, but you nonetheless get a good idea from the guide as to how the Irish nobility of the time lived and what each of the various rooms were used for.
I have been to see Ross Castle in Killarney and would say that it is a much better and more complete example, with the rooms furnished, of a castle/tower house. However, you do have to pay for the guided tour of Ross Castle, but I think it is worth it - having seen both places, and I think children would also enjoy it more than Listowel Castle. Ross Castle would be my preference.
However, if you happen to be in Listowel and do not intend visiting Ross Castle, then you should consider a visit to Listowel Castle. It is free, and the guide is very good, and you will learn a lot about the history of Irish tower houses.
