“Fantastic wedding venue in a really charming market town”
Reviewed September 21, 2010

This hotel is a fantastic place for weddings, our own was held there in July this year and was very very memorable due to the warmth and hospitality of Patrice and everyone at the Arms. Being right in the heart of the town, it comes with the charm and bustle of an old market centre. The hotel faces the square which has a beautiful old refurbished church, no a theatre of some note. Definitely recommended for civilised parties with some late sing songs.

This area comes to life once a year for the race meeting in September. The hotel is on the bank of the river which the race course is on the other bank.
It is in a prime location in the corner of a lovely square. The square includes two church one used as the art's centre which is gothic. There is a castle which is well presersved remnant - guided tours are given but not available when I visited.
The hotel is a mix of old and new. The entrance is magnificent with exceptional furniture and the bar and restaurant are also lovely ares well furnishes and comfortable.
The bedrooms are not so appealing depending where you are put. At the front of the hotel the rooms are comfortable with creaking wooden floors. The floors look wonderful but as the night progresses they become a nightmare. Not only can your floor wake you if you need to use the bathroom but the floor above you the floorboards are worse.
After having the worse night in my life at this hotel - the staff said it was due to the large wedding party but no that was not true. The room was not fit for purpose , everytime someone opened a door below or above the room resounded with it closing. Every step in the rooms above was like it was in your room and the maids leaving the window open filled the room with smoke as customers stand outside to smoke.
Along the bank of the river the local youth concregate and basically smear the walls with grafity and leave litter in their wake. Several windows of the hotel have been smashed and if dinning in the restaurant in the evening their presence is felt at all times.
I think the area is wonderful and the need of updating this hotel to cater for privacy and comfort is essential. I loved it but was so disappointed with the thinks that was wrong.
We were moved for my last night to a comfortable room but not perfect. The shower took ages to drain and the taps did not let the water run but trickle and the toilet took an age to flush. It is not a 4 star hotel

I Have to say I was very disappointed with the Listowel arms, We where only staying one night as we had business in the region but the hotel was not worth €120 per room.

When we arrived the receptionist was not very polite, at times we felt we where an inconvenience to her not a great first impression. She told us where our room was and done the basics but did not go out of her way to make us feel welcome.

On a good note the hotel bar food was nice and the ladies behind the bar where friendly and chatty.

When I got to the room it looked and felt very tired and dated, my bed seemed to be a million years old and it felt like it also.

The next morning we went down for breakfast and we where met by an older lady that gave a clear impression that she did not want to be there, not as much as a good morning. Just tea/toast and what do you want to eat!!

We handed in our key and left ....I hope the hotel management take note of this, the stay could have been saved by a little extra effort from the staff at the reception and breakfast but they failed to do that bit extra.....Not a good sign when there are so many hotels in trouble…

We used the Listowel Arms Hotel for a stopover en-route to Shannon Airport. Its conveniently located in Listowel near to local shops. The bar had a warm and friendly atmosphere, staff were polite and efficient, bar food was of a very good standard and reasonably priced. Our room in the exec area was noisy but think that was only due to parties taking place that night.

Before forking our your hard earned cash, check whether the beds have mattress protectors. Ours didn't. Not only unhygenic, but guaranteed a cold, uncomfortable nights sleep. This and a miserly two sachets of coffee and two tea bags in room made for an uncomfortable and disappointing stay.

We stayed at the Listowel Arms Hotel for a wedding. My mum booked 2 double rooms over the telephone a month before the wedding and was told a deposit of €140 was needed (this is the most I've heard of a hotel looking for a deposit). She wrote a letter and sent a cheque for €140. When we arrived at the hotel, only 1 double room was available, the girl who actually was the same person my mum spoke to on the telephone, argued with my mum that she only booked 1 double room. Then when we argued back that we booked 2 rooms it was clear to see they were fully booked and didn't have a 2nd double room to offer. The cheque had been cashed by the hotel by the time we arrived to stay. We were told to wait and they would check the room could be under another name. We were asked to wait 10 mins. We went to see the double room we were given the key to, tiny, old fashioned, cracks in the wall, 2 single beds, most definitely not worth €140. After 20 mins we returned to reception to be told they were trying to sort it and there 2 options the first options was to ask the bride would the groomsmen, who were all singley booked, be prepared to share a room together and then there wud be a spare room or to move us to another hotel. We asked how long before we would know if there was a room available, at this point the hotel staff all 3 of them were told this wasn't good enough the 2 rooms were booked, we wouldn't be moving to a different hotel. The wedding planner Patrice apologised and said they hoped it wouldn't come to that and that they would try and convince the groomsmen to share.Patrice was the most apologetic and the person who sorted it out. 30 mins after speaking to her, we got a double room this room was bigger than the room my parents had, it contained a double bed and a single bed. Some guests at the hotel had room with a double bed and 2 single beds, others a room with 2 single beds, others had a double bed and a couch in their rooms and every room was charged as €140 per night. It makes no sense, some were smaller and really needed to be done up. Be very careful booking with this hotel and be careful with the room you are given
